Blackhawks' Toews sustains upper-body injury

CHICAGO -- Chicago Blackhawks center Jonathan Toews did not play in the third period of Saturday's Game 5 of the 2013 Stanley Cup Final because of an upper-body injury.

Toews, the Blackhawks captain, was on the receiving end of a huge hit from Boston Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk midway through the second period, but he continued to play until the end of the period. He sat on the bench for the third period, but did not take a shift while the Blackhawks were able to protect the lead and claim a 3-1 win at United Center to take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 series.

"We're hopeful he'll be ready next game, upper-body," Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. "We'll see how he is tomorrow. I checked on him a couple times there. I think he wanted to play, but we'll see."

Game 6 is Monday at TD Garden (8 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC, RDS)

Toews, who assisted on both of Patrick Kane's goals to give the team a two-goal advantage in the 3-1 victory Saturday night, cut from right-to-left toward the middle of the slot with the puck before Boychuk drilled him from the side.

"He was cutting to the net and I came across and read it and hit him," Boychuk said. "Tried to hit him clean. I thought it was. I don't know how he fell, awkwardly, or how he fell; but I'm going to try and play physical. He's going to drive the net like he's supposed to and I'm going to hit. ... He was bending forward so (I) was just trying to stop him from going to the net."

Asked if he was worried about potential supplemental discipline, Boychuk responded, "No. because I'm pretty sure it was clean."

Toews took four shifts after the Boychuk hit, including one that ended during the final minute of the second period. Quenneville said he wasn't sure if the injury occurred on one specific play.

With the two points in this contest, Toews now has two goals and 12 points during the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs. He scored a goal in Game 4 to help the Blackhawks even this series at 2-2, and Chicago's top line has been dominant in the past two contests.

During the third period, the Blackhawks shuffled their lines around with Toews unable to play. He was sitting on the bench during the final period, offering words of encouragement when he wasn't lobbying for ice time.

"It's nice to see him out there," Blackhawks winger Patrick Sharp said. "He didn't get a shift, but he was there to chatter a little bit on the bench and keep us into it. He's part of the team, obviously, and it was great to have everybody together."
