Senators' Spezza ruled out for Game 2

Ottawa Senators coach Paul MacLean on Wednesday said center Jason Spezza would not play in Game 2 of the team's Eastern Conference Semifinal series against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday (7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, RDS).

Spezza has not played since having back surgery Feb. 1 to repair a herniated disc but has been skating with the team's extra players since May 10. However, he did not travel with the team to Pittsburgh for Game 1 of the series, a 4-1 Senators loss Tuesday.

The back issues limited Spezza to five regular-season games, the last coming Jan. 27. He had two goals and three assists in those games, and in 53 Stanley Cup Playoff games he has 51 points.

Quote of the Day

The groove of being behind a bench is going to be interesting at first, but thank God we have a few exhibition games to get rid of those cobwebs. Overall the excitement of it all and the freshness and coming back refreshed, all those things are going to be assets. If [the players] come ready to give their best effort in practice and games, good things are going to happen. I'm always looking for results. It's not always on the scoreboard. It's winning and building something.
