Bruins know there's no reason to get overconfident

BOSTON -- Don't think the players and coaching staff of the Boston Bruins weren't paying attention to the events that transpired at Consol Energy Center on Friday when the New York Islanders rallied for a victory over the favored Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.

"You just have to look around the League and see what's going on, a lot of series are tied, 1-1," Julien said following his team's practice Saturday in preparation for Game 2 against the Toronto Maple Leafs at TD Garden (7 p.m. ET, CNBC, CBC, RDS). "There's nothing to get cocky about, or confident about. You just got to play every team the way you thought you would play that first one."

The Bruins lead the best-of-7 series against the Maple Leafs, 1-0.

Bruins forward Brad Marchand said he watched the comeback made by the Islanders on the way to a 4-3 victory that evened that best-of-7 after two games.

"We saw what happened and that's one thing you don't want to do," he said. "You don't want guys to let up and you can learn from other people's mistakes. We want to make sure that if you're up, you don't want to let them back in it."

The Penguins opened a 3-1 lead but couldn't hold it, something Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk said his team was guilty of this season as well.

"Pittsburgh went up 3-1 and that's a situation we've experienced many times this year, and we let that slip," Boychuk told NHL.com. "Hopefully, we learned our lesson on that one, but it is playoffs and anybody can step up and win at any time. You just have to be the better team every night."

That's something that Toronto forward James van Riemsdyk discussed.

"It's tough to say that momentum is a key, but I think just playing more desperate than the other team is most important [from game to game]," van Riemsdyk said.

Toronto defenseman Ryan O'Byrne, who could be in Saturday's lineup, said that's what makes playoff hockey so exciting.

"If Game 1 doesn't go the way you want, you put it behind you," O'Byrne said. "We had two hard days of work and are ready to come back for Game 2. That's why it's a seven-game series. You don't win it in one game. We know we need to be better and need to execute better."

Maple Leafs forward Nazem Kadri was impressed by the Islanders' gutsy performance.

"The Isles got some puck luck as well, and it's a hard-working Isles team," Kadri said. "It's not easy to go on the road and beat a skilled team like that, especially with Sidney Crosby coming back and all the hype around that, so they did an excellent job."

Julien knows anything is possible, which is why he has his players on high alert despite the fact 10 players on the Maple Leafs were experiencing their first taste of the Stanley Cup Playoffs on Wednesday.

"It's about what's out there on the ice, and what's going to show up," Julien said. "You can have all the experience in the world, but if you don't show up and play your game the way you should, you're not going to win.

"There wasn't much experience on that [New York] Islanders team [Friday], but they still won."
