Sutter says Greene not ready for Kings

ST. LOUIS -- After dropping Game 1 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals series 2-1 in overtime against the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night, the Los Angeles Kings held an optional skate Wednesday at Scottrade Center.

A dozen players along with backup goalie Jonathan Bernier participated in advance of Thursday's Game 2.

Among them was defenseman Matt Greene, who missed Game 1 and the regular-season finale with an undisclosed injury.

Greene, who missed the majority of the regular season with a back injury that required surgery, sustained an unrelated ailment after returning to action April 18. Coach Darryl Sutter was hoping to get the veteran defenseman into more games but Greene appeared in four contests after his return and has missed the past two.

Sutter wasn't specific about Greene’s status but hinted that rookie Jake Muzzin and Keaton Ellerby, who replaced Greene in the lineup Tuesday, will keep their spots in Game 2.

"It’s not just healthy. He’s got to be up to speed," Sutter said of Greene. "He needed about 10 games, to be quite honest. You don’t just put him in the lineup because he’s Matt Greene. Matt Greene has to be able to play, to perform.

"We were hoping to get more games, quite honest, from him before and he got banged up. We’ll see. I’m quite happy playing those two kids because they’re both very capable too."
