With the rumors swirling that the Boston Bruins are in the mix to acquire Jarome Iginla from the Calgary Flames, some have speculated goaltending prospect Malcolm Subban would have to be involved in order to land the services of the future Hall of Fame right wing.
But Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said Subban, the team's first-round pick in the 2012 NHL Draft, isn't going anywhere.
"I can tell you this: I'm not trading Malcolm Subban," Chiarelli said on 98.5 The Sports Hub's "Toucher and Rich" show. "He's young. He's a very good goalie prospect and I see him in our future and being a big part of our future. We've got some goalie depth, but I'm telling you I'm not trading Malcolm Subban. There are other players, and we've got a fairly well-stocked cupboard of prospects, but I'm not trading Malcolm Subban."
Subban, the younger brother of Montreal Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban, is having an outstanding season for the Belleville Bulls of the Ontario Hockey League. Malcolm Subbban is 29-11-4 with a 2.14 goals-against average and .934 save percentage. His GAA and save percentage are tops in the OHL.
Chiarelli said during his radio interview that it could be "two-to-three years" or "might be sooner" before Subban is ready for the NHL.
Tuukka Rask, 26, has excelled in his first season as the Bruins' No. 1 goaltender and will be a restricted free agent after this season. Backup Anton Khudobin, also 26, has been sharp in his appearances this season as well.
The Bruins also have 23-year-old Niklas Svedberg playing well with the Providence Bruins in the AHL. He is 30-7-2 and ranks in the top 10 in GAA (2.26) and save percentage (.922).
