New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur (back) has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to Feb. 24, meaning he will not be eligible to play until at least Monday.
The Devils play at the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday and at the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.
"It's just a precaution," New Jersey general manager Lou Lamoriello said, according to Rich Chere of the Newark Star Ledger. "It's a day-to-day situation. He's still feeling uncomfortable. It would be foolish to go X number of hours on a plane to Winnipeg."
Brodeur pulled himself out of his scheduled start Sunday against the Jets after experiencing soreness in his back during warmups. He said he took himself out of the starting lineup as a precaution but did not seem concerned that the injury was anything significant or something that would keep him out long-term.
The Devils recalled Keith Kinkaid from Albany of the American Hockey League on Tuesday to replace Brodeur. Kinkaid will remain with the team and serve as the backup to Johan Hedberg for at least the first two games on the Devils upcoming road trip.
Kinkaid is 17-11-5 for the Devils' top affiliate with a 2.69 goals-against average, .905 save percentage and two shutouts.
This is the fourth recall for the 6-3, 190-pound 23-year-old, who has yet to play in the NHL.
"It's exciting," Kinkaid told the Devils' website. "I couldn't really sleep last night; I was pretty excited to get up here again, and just show them what I have in practice, see how much I've improved and just battle every day. I want to be the guy that always gets the recall and hopefully be up here for a shot. I just have to keep battling and working hard."
Devils coach Peter DeBoer said Ryan Carter, out with an upper-body injury since last Monday, was "feeling much better."
