CHICAGO -- Ray Emery will get the start Friday night for the Chicago Blackhawks, but the bigger goaltending story of the day occurred when starter Corey Crawford didn’t participate in the morning skate.
Crawford, who's 7-0-3 with a 1.65 goals-against average, is out with an undisclosed upper-body injury and was listed as day-to-day by Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville after Chicago’s morning skate Friday.
Crawford took a hit in the third period of Tuesday's game against the Anaheim Ducks, when Bobby Ryan's right knee struck him in the mask as he flipped over him on a rush to the net, but Quenneville didn't say that was necessarily what caused the injury. Crawford finished the game and lost in a shootout.
"I don't know if it was that or from practice," Quenneville said. "I don't know if it was a defining blow."
Recently acquired goalie Henrik Karlsson was recalled from Rockford of the American Hockey League on Friday morning to back up Emery, who is 3-0-0 with a 2.62 GAA and .920 save percentage.
"He's the guy and I just play when I get in there," Emery said of Crawford. "I want there not to be a letdown and make them comfortable with giving him time off. Whenever I get called upon, I need to be ready to go."
