Report: Smith out with shoulder injury

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith told MLive.com that he has a sprain of the AC joint in his right shoulder, and estimated he would be out 3-4 weeks.

Smith was injured midway through the first period of Saturday's game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, when he was hit into the boards by Columbus' Derek MacKenzie.

The Red Wings' defense corps has been hit hard by injuries. Smith will be the sixth blueliner to miss time due to injury already this season.

Smith is second on the Wings with a plus-4 rating, and he has one assist in eight games.

Quote of the Day

I don't think it's really truly going to sink in until we drop the puck, to be honest. I know there's going to be a lot of smoke and mirrors with the media attention and all that. We came [Monday] and it was sort of a light day to get things organized. We just want to focus in on the business aspect, the game itself. That's what we're preparing to do. Get these next couple of days out of the way and it's game on.
