'Iron Mike' Keenan talks upcoming documentary

LAS VEGAS -- The life and career of former NHL coach and general manager Mike Keenan will be portrayed in an upcoming documentary that is the brainchild of The Shooting Eye Corporation, a production company based out of Hamilton, Ont.

"They just approached me and asked me if I would be willing to have them do a documentary on me," Keenan told NHL.com Monday. "That was it."

"Iron Mike: The Mike Keenan Story" will take nine months to a year to produce, Keenan said.

"They're just into it three or four months now," he added. "I haven't even been interviewed that much."

Others, including Wayne Gretzky, Scotty Bowman and Don Cherry, have been.

"They've interviewed a teacher that taught me in high school," Keenan added. "They want some of my classmates in high school, some of my classmates in University, both at St. Lawrence and at the University of Toronto. They want to talk to a couple of guys that I played minor pro with in Roanoke, like [Dallas Stars assistant general manager] Les Jackson. They want to talk to players that played for me and players that I played with at various levels. Guys and gals I went to school with. Former coaches of mine, like Tom Watt at the University of Toronto.

"They've got a lot to deal with."

Keenan is curious about the material, but said he will have some editorial control over the final product.

"That's the deal," he said, smiling. "I said, 'You can do this, but I get to tell you what you can put on and what you can't.'"

Quote of the Day

It's very special, obviously; there is draft day and then there's the day that you sign your first deal. It's been a crazy couple of weeks and I'm very honored to be able to do that."
