Reports: Maple Leafs to sign Franson, Mottau

Defenseman Cody Franson is expected to re-sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs, according to TSN's Bob McKenzie.

The contract is for one year, close to $1 million, the report says.

Franson, 25, played in 57 games for the Maple Leafs last season, with five goals and 16 assists. He was a minus-1 after playing the previous two seasons for the Nashville Predators.

Comcast SportsNet New England reported Saturday that defenseman Mike Mottau also is expected to sign a one-year contract with the Maple Leafs.

Mottau, 34, had been playing for the San Antonio Rampage, the Florida Panthers' affiliate in the American Hockey League.

He has played 313 NHL games after making his debut in 2000-01.

Defenseman Kurtis Foster is expected to sign with the Philadelphia Flyers, according to Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia.

The 31-year-old played for the Anaheim Ducks, New Jersey Devils and Minnesota Wild last season. He is a veteran of 382 NHL games, starting in 2002-03.

Quote of the Day

I mean, hockey had to change the rules because of Marty, and that's impressive. I got two Stanley Cup rings because of the guy. Look at the banners of [Scott Niedermayer, Scott Stevens and Ken Daneyko] and Marty is right up there when you think about the New Jersey Devils; he was part of the core group and he'll go down as one of the greatest goalies ever.
