Russia increases lead to 4-1 as Vasilevskiy shuts door

BOISBRIAND, Quebec – A 5-on-3 power play goal by Detroit Red Wings prospect Xavier Ouellet got the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League on the board, but the continued excellence of Andrey Vasilevskiy in the Russian net and goals by Maxim Shalunov and Mikhail Naumenkov allowed Team Russia to enter the second intermission with a 4-1 lead in Game 1 of the Subway Super Series.

Team QMJHL outshot Russia 11-6 in the second period and 23-15 after 40 minutes, but Vasilevskiy has made a number of highlight-worthy saves to frustrate the Quebec league players time and again.

Buffalo Sabres prospect Mikhail Grigorenko assisted on Naumenkov’s goal at 17:35 of the second period to give him a goal and an assist in the contest, and he’s created a number of scoring chances in a standout performance through two periods.

Ouellet, a second-round pick of the Red Wings in 2012, converted a beautiful feed from Jonathan Huberdeau by using a screen to beat Vasilevskiy top corner at 2:53 of the second. But the momentum for the QMJHL was quickly cut by Shalunov, a 2011 fourth-round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks who beat goaltender Etienne Marcoux with a wicked wrist shot at 6:14.

Vasilevskiy maintained Russia’s two-goal margin with a pad save on Philip Danault from the slot and again off Charles Hudon on the rebound less than a minute after Shalunov’s goal, and he committed similar robbery on Samuel Henley less than 20 seconds before Naumenkov made it 4-1 Russia at 17:35.
