Nick Baptiste will be entering his second season with the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League in 2012-13. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound right wing, regarded as a top prospect for the 2013 NHL Draft, produced eight goals and 27 points in 64 games last season. Sudbury is representing the OHL in the 2012 Junior Club World Cup tournament from Aug. 18-26 in Omsk, Russia. Baptiste has agreed to take the time and maintain a blog for NHL.com that will document his stay in Russia.
Hi everyone. I'm Nick Baptiste from Ottawa, Ontario, in my second year with the OHL’s Sudbury Wolves!
I am really excited to be taking part in this year's Junior Club World Cup in Omsk, Russia. This year is a big year for me with the NHL Draft in New Jersey next June. I am really excited to get the season started and it is great to start with our trip to Russia. I would like to thank the NHL for giving me this opportunity. It's a great way to keep everyone up to date with the Wolves trip to Russia.
We bussed in from Sudbury to Toronto where we met all our teammates at Pearson Airport. It was great to see the guys after a summer at home. Our first flight was from Toronto to Paris. It is my first time overseas and unfortunately didn’t get any sleep on the plane!
After a quick transfer in Paris, we had another four hour flight to Moscow. As soon as we landed in Moscow, we bussed to the Red Army CSKA Arena. It was an old arena but had amazing Russian hockey heritage.
Our second day in Moscow featured a sightseeing trip to Red Square and other stops in Moscow. On Thursday we had a game against CSKA. It was a close game … we played well although it was tough because we only practiced twice before the game. It was a close 4-2 loss with the Russians scoring a late empty net goal. It felt great to be back on the ice and with the team again!
We left Moscow and flew with other teams to Omsk. It was a late night and we didn’t get to the hotel until almost 4 a.m. We woke up a couple of hours later for breakfast and then back to bed for a bit before lunch at hotel. We are 11 hours ahead of Sudbury, so it is tough to adjust.
We went to the rink in Omsk for practice. It is really nice facility with a great dressing room here for the Wolves. We had a great practice with the team. After practice we got the team bus to stop at a local grocery store where we were able to find some North American food which was a nice surprise.
Today we are going back to the rink for practice and a team volleyball tournament!
