Oilers re-sign Plante, VandeVelde

The Edmonton Oilers announced Thursday they have agreed to terms with defenseman Alex Plante and center Chris VandeVelde on one-year contracts.

Plante, 23, played in 38 games last season with the Oklahoma City Barons in the American Hockey League and tallied 13 points (one goal, 12 assists) and 84 penalty minutes while being named to the Western Conference All-Star Team. He also appeared in three games for the Oilers, collecting an assist.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound blueliner was selected in the first round (No. 15) by Edmonton in the 2007 NHL Draft. In 10 career NHL games, he has a pair of assists and 15 penalty minutes.

VandeVelde, 25, had 23 points (seven goals, 16 assists) in 68 games last season with the Barons. He also had six goals and 10 penalty minutes in 14 postseason games. He also appeared in five games for the Oilers in 2011-12 and scored his first NHL goal on March 25 against Columbus. In 17 career NHL games, VandeVelde (6-foot-2, 190 pounds) has a goal and two assists with 14 penalty minutes.

VandeVelde was selected by Edmonton in the fourth round (No. 97) of the 2005 NHL Draft.
