Rangers re-sign Martin Biron

The New York Rangers have re-signed backup goaltender Martin Biron to a two-year contract. Multiple media reports, including TSN, ESPN New York and the New York Post, say the deal is worth a total of $2.6 million.

"Very excited to be back in NYC for the next 2 years!!" Biron said on his Twitter account. "See you all in September."

Biron could have become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Biron, 34, was 12-6-2 with a .904 save percentage, a 2.46 goals-against average and two shutouts in 21 games for the Rangers this past season, giving New York a reliable backup that allowed coach John Tortorella to give starter Henrik Lundqvist more rest. The reduced workload helped Lundqvist win the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goaltender.

In 500 career regular-season games, Biron is 228-188-26 with a 2.61 GAA and a .911 save percentage. He has spent the last two seasons with the Rangers after playing for Buffalo, Philadelphia and the New York Islanders.
