Senators sign Lazar to entry-level contract

The Ottawa Senators on Tuesday signed 2013 first-round pick Curtis Lazar to a three-year, entry-level contract.

"Curtis is a first-round pick and obviously a player and prospect that we think has a good upside," Senators general manager Bryan Murray told the team's website. "We're trying to get our best players tied up and he is certainly one of the guys of the future in this organization so we're very, very happy to get him signed at this point."

The 17th pick of the draft, Lazar had 38 goals and 61 points in 72 games with the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League last season, and then had nine goals and two assists in 20 playoff games.

Capitals' Rechlicz on shootout winner: 'Just got lucky'

Preseason games give coaches the opportunities to experiment, try things they wouldn't normally do during the season.

Like, for instance, using a player with zero goals and 105 penalty minutes in 26 NHL games in the fourth round of a shootout.

That's just what Washington Capitals coach Adam Oates did Tuesday against the Philadelphia Flyers, using Joel Rechlicz in the post-overtime tiebreaker. It worked as Rechlicz beat Ray Emery with a backhander for the game-deciding goal.

Thomas to join Panthers on ice Tuesday

Florida Panthers general manager Dale Tallon told reporters Monday that goaltender Tim Thomas will be on the ice for training camp Tuesday after joining the team on a professional tryout.

The 39-year-old goaltender passed his physical Monday.

"He's a two-time Vezina Trophy winner, a Conn Smythe Trophy winner," Tallon told reporters. "We need goaltending. We need somebody to help us get to where we need to get to. Right now it's Tim Thomas. He's going to get an opportunity."

Thomas, 39, was named the League's top goalie in 2009 and 2011. He backstopped the Boston Bruins to the 2011 Stanley Cup, and along the way became the second goalie in NHL history to win the Vezina, Conn Smythe Trophy and Stanley Cup in the same season.
