Rangers without Del Zotto against Capitals

It appears from the defensive pairings at Wednesday's morning skate that the New York Rangers will be without defenseman Michael Del Zotto for Wednesday night's game against the Washington Capitals.

Del Zotto had the flu and didn't travel with the team to Washington on Tuesday, at which time coach Alain Vigneault said it was doubtful he would play.

Justin Falk, who made his season debut for the Rangers on Saturday against the St. Louis Blues, was on the ice and is likely to take Del Zotto's place in the lineup.

Hockey and the Importance of Green Power

Blaine Collison is the director of the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership. He is on the advisory boards for the Association of Climate Change Officers, the Sustainable Endowments Institute, and the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.

Hockey people are outdoors people. We joyfully spend hours upon hours on frozen ponds and lakes playing “Our Game.” When I was a kid growing up in northern Delaware, the best three weeks of winter were the weeks when the ponds on the farm froze and we could skate outside. Like thousands of kids (and adults) across North America, we’d race to the ice any moment we could and play until well after it was too dark to see the puck.

Playing on black ice is part of our collective experience, our heritage and our future. We love the outdoor connection that the Winter Classic brings us each season.

The bad news is that North America is seeing less and less black ice each year. Due to rising greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) from fossil fuel use, global temperatures are rising. We’re starting to get shorter and warmer winters in many places. Ski areas have to manufacture more snow. Ponds are freezing less often.

The good news is that the National Hockey League is using clean, green power – electricity derived from renewable resources like wind, solar and biomass – for 100% of its annual New York headquarters’ operations as well as for the entire Stanley Cup Playoffs. The NHL is the first major professional sports league to join the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership, a national, voluntary program that currently includes more than 1,500 businesses, institutions, non-profits, and agencies, all using green power for some or all of their electricity needs. Close to two-thirds of these organizations are using 100% green power.

Green Power Partners include hockey cities: Washington, DC (Go Caps!); Philadelphia, PA; Boston, MA; Dallas, TX; and San Jose, CA. Green Power Partners also include a host of companies that support hockey fans and their businesses every day; here is a list of our Top 50 Partners.

The NHL and each of these cities and companies have chosen green power not only for the positive environmental benefits of clean renewable energy, but also because green power is a winning economic strategy for business and society alike. Renewable energy creates jobs in our communities. Renewable energy expands our domestic energy supply. Renewable energy protects our businesses and society from volatile prices in the fossil fuels markets. And renewable energy protects our environment.

Today, more than 1,500 Green Power Partners are collectively using more than 28 billion kilowatt-hours of green power annually, equal to avoiding the annual carbon pollution from the electricity use of more than three million average American homes. And today, green power is available to every single business, institution and electricity consumer in the United States.

We at the EPA are proud to continue to work with the NHL, its teams, its suppliers and its fans to grow our U.S. green power sector. We invite you to join us. And we hope to see you at an NHL game- or out on the black ice- this winter.

Weekes: Rangers must turn it around against Capitals

It's still too early in the 2013-14 season to really pass judgment on any players or teams. But it's impossible to have a discussion of the National Hockey League's early-season disappointments without mentioning the New York Rangers, who have gone 1-4-0 to start the season and have a League-worst minus-16 goal differential entering action Tuesday night.

With four games remaining on their crazy nine-game season-opening road trip, the Rangers must turn things around. And they're going to get a great opportunity to do that against the Washington Capitals, a team they eliminated in the first round of last year's playoffs.

I've spoken to several guys on the Rangers and their biggest hurdle is they didn't get a regular training camp. While Madison Square Garden was being renovated, they were in Banff, Alberta for camp. They had tons of travel through the western time zones and they played their preseason games out there, so they never felt settled. They just felt like they were displaced. Also, they're playing a different style right now that they're not quite used to.

Senators' Turris has moved on from time with Coyotes

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Kyle Turris has been back to Arizona once since being traded to the Ottawa Senators, but he doesn't expect the reception to be much different than the last time he returned to town when the Senators play the finale of a six-game season-opening road trip Tuesday against the Phoenix Coyotes.

Taken by the Coyotes with the third pick of the 2007 NHL Draft, Turris played three NHL games in 2007-08 after his freshman season at college finished, and then had 20 points in 63 games in 2008-09. He spent two of the next three seasons in the minors, and after a difficult contract negotiation and complaints by Turris about the restrictive coaching style of Dave Tippett, his ice time and playing partners, Coyotes general manager Don Maloney opted to trade Turris on Dec. 17, 2011.

Panthers' Bjugstad returns, Thomas close to returning

The Florida Panthers confirmed that towering center Nick Bjugstad will make his 2013-14 season debut against the Nashville Predators in Music City on Tuesday. Bjugstad suffered a concussion during training camp that forced him to miss the season's first six games. The Panthers went 2-4-0 in those games.

During the morning skate in Nashville, the 6-foot-6 Bjugstad skated on a line with Krys Barch and Tomas Kopecky. In 11 games last season, the 21-year-old Minnesota native collected one goal, no assists and a minus-8 rating.

Avalanche look to tighten defense against Stars

DENVER -- While the Colorado Avalanche have gotten off to a 5-0 start for the first time since they were the Quebec Nordiques in 1994-95, coach Patrick Roy said not all is perfect with his team heading into Tuesday night's game against the Dallas Stars at Pepsi Center.

The Avalanche were outshot 19-7 in the second period of a 5-1 win Saturday in Washington when Semyon Varlamov was in goal. They were outshot 15-6 in the second period of their Oct. 10 game in Boston, a 2-0 win behind the goaltending of Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

"The last two games, I think we gave up too much in the second period both times," Roy said Tuesday. "It was at the end of our trip when we had the lead. Things like that happen. We'd like to cut down a bit on shots. The chances, we gave a bit too many, though not as bad as it appears.

Reimer in for Maple Leafs, van Riemsdyk questionable

TORONTO -- The Toronto Maple Leafs will have at least one lineup change and could be looking at another one Tuesday as they host the Minnesota Wild.

James van Riemsdyk left the morning skate early and may not be able to play.

"James van Riemsdyk is a question mark for tonight," coach Randy Carlyle said. "So we'll see how he responds to some treatment here now and later on today. We'll make a decision based upon where he's at for tonight."

If van Riemsdyk can't play, Troy Bodie or Trevor Smith could be inserted into the lineup.

James Reimer returns in goal, making his first start since Oct. 5, when he was pulled from a start against the Ottawa Senators after allowing four goals on 21 shots.

Howard remains out for Red Wings

Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard, who bruised his glove hand in a 5-2 win Saturday against the Philadelphia Flyers, spent extra time working with goaltending coach Jim Bedard before revealing that he was doubtful to play Tuesday against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

In his stead, backup Jonas Gustavsson will get the start in consecutive days, something he hasn't done since March 10-11, 2012, when he was a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Gustavsson looked sharp making his first start of the season Monday against the Boston Bruins. He made 28 saves, including all three he faced during a third-period 5-on-3 Boston power play, in a 3-2 Detroit win. Tuesday will be Gustavsson's first home start of the season.
