Penguins' Malkin to miss two more games

NEW YORK -- Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin did not travel with the team for its game Wednesday against the New York Rangers (8 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TSN2) and will miss the Penguins' home game Thursday against the Minnesota Wild (7 p.m. ET, NHLN-US) before being re-evaluated, according to Penguins coach Dan Bylsma. Bylsma said Malkin skated on his own Wednesday in Pittsburgh.

Malkin sustained a lower-body injury Saturday when he fell feet-first into the boards during the Penguins' game at the Detroit Red Wings. He sat out the game Monday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

It's just the latest injury news for a team that also is missing its top four defensemen due to a variety of injuries. With Rob Scuderi (ankle), Paul Martin (undisclosed) and Brooks Orpik (concussion) already out, the Penguins put Kris Letang on injured reserve Monday with an upper-body injury. Pittsburgh filled his spot on the blue line by calling up Philip Samuelsson from the American Hockey League this week.

Bylsma said he's been pleased with the performance of this patched-up defense corps.

Devils get Gionta back as they host Senators

Stephen Gionta will return to the New Jersey Devils' lineup Wednesday after missing the past 11 games with a sprained right ankle.

Gionta skated as the center on the fourth line between Steve Bernier and Cam Janssen during the Devils' morning skate at Prudential Center in advance of their game against the Ottawa Senators. He has two assists and is a minus-5 in 21 games this season.

Janssen is in the lineup despite leaving practice early Tuesday with an apparent right leg injury.

Martin Brodeur will start for the Devils after making 33 saves in a 3-0 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. That performance came on the heels of Brodeur allowing five goals in a 5-4 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Dec. 10.

Fantasy Spin: Avalanche's Johnson quieting doubters

High expectations have followed Erik Johnson's career since he was taken with the first pick in the 2006 NHL Draft by the St. Louis Blues.

When Johnson was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Kevin Shattenkirk and Chris Stewart in 2011, the pressure shifted to his new role in the Mile High City. Johnson's struggles continued, with the low point coming in 2012-13 when he failed to register a goal in 31 games.

But just when fantasy owners thought he had reached irrelevance, he has navigated his way back into the equation.

Hartman recaps exhibition win against Minnesota State

Forward Ryan Hartman is in his second season with the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League. The native of West Dundee, Ill. helped lead the United States National Junior Team to a gold medal at the 2013 World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia. He was one of three returning players from that team invited to the U.S. National Junior Team selection camp this week in Minneapolis, Minnesota, that will help determine the roster for the 2014 WJC in Malmo, Sweden. Hartman, selected in the first round (No. 30) by the Chicago Blackhawks at the 2013 NHL Draft, had two goals, three points and a plus-4 rating in seven games as a checking-line forward at last season's tournament. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound wing has graciously offered to maintain a blog for NHL.com during the four-day camp at Mariucci Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota.

Hi all! We just concluded our opening exhibition game here in Mankato against Minnesota State with a 3-2 win in overtime.

I thought we started off a little sloppy but it was our first full game as a unit. I thought as the period went on we got a little better. I thought we lacked a little bit on the power play [1-for-3] and let up two penalty-kill goals [on four chances] so we need to improve special teams, but overall it was a good game.

I thought it was pretty awesome that Hudson [Fasching] was able to get the game-winner, being from the University of Minnesota. I'm sure he had family and friends at the game and to pull a move like that in overtime was pretty cool, especially when you're wearing the USA crest so it's pretty awesome. Everyone in the locker room was pretty proud of him.

CHI @ NSH - 11:33 of the Second Period

At 11:33 of the second period in the Blackhawks/Predators game, the Situation Room initiated a video review because the puck entered the Nashville net. The referee's original call on the ice was "no goal" but a discussion between the four on-ice officials resulted in a "good goal" decision. Video review confirmed that Nick Leddy's shot crossed the goal line in a legal fashion therefore the decision on the ice stands - good goal Chicago.

WPG @ BUF - 13:38 of the Third Period

At 13:38 of the third period in the Jets/Sabres game, video review supported the referee's call on the ice that Matt Ellis' stick was below the level of the crossbar when he deflected Kevin Porter's shot into the Winnipeg net. According to Rule 60.5 "The determining factor is where the puck makes contact with the stick. If the puck makes contact with the stick below the level of the crossbar and enters the goal, this goal shall be allowed". Good goal Buffalo.

TBL @ NYI - 1:05 of Third Period

At 1:05 of the third period in the Lightning/Islanders game, the Situation Room initiated a video review because the puck entered the Tampa Bay net. The referee informed the Situation Room that he blew his whistle to stop play before the puck crossed the goal line therefore this is not a reviewable play. The call on the ice stands - no goal New York Islanders.
