At the Rink: Bruins at Flyers

PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Nick Schultz will play his 1,000th NHL game Wednesday when the Boston Bruins visit Wells Fargo Center (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, TVA Sports).

Schultz, 34, will become the 301st player and the 103rd defenseman to play 1,000 games.

"Just fortunate to get a chance to play this long and play in the League," Schultz said. "It's an honor to be part of it; a dream come true. You want to play in the NHL and be fortunate to play for a long time."

The Flyers (18-15-7) signed Schultz in July 2014 as a depth defenseman. But injuries early in the 2014-15 season opened a spot in the lineup and Schultz has played too well to come out. The Flyers have played 122 games the past two seasons entering Wednesday, and Schultz has been in the lineup for 119 of them.

At the Rink: Blue Jackets at Maple Leafs

TORONTO -- Forward Shawn Matthias hopes the opportunity to skate on the Toronto Maple Leafs top line will allow him to kick start his season from an offensive perspective.

The 27-year-old left wing will play on a line with center Tyler Bozak and right wing PA Parenteau when the Maple Leafs host the Columbus Blue Jackets at Air Canada Centre on Wednesday (7 p.m. ET; SN, FS-O).

Matthias was promoted to the top line replacing injured James van Riemsdyk, who will miss 6-8 weeks with a fractured foot.

After scoring 18 goals with the Vancouver Canucks last season, Matthias has struggled offensively this season. He has three goals and 12 points in 39 games and has one goal in his las 23 games.

DraftKings daily fantasy value picks for Jan. 13

Each day during the 2015-16 season, NHL.com's fantasy staff will identify one player at each position worth owning in DraftKings daily fantasy hockey contests. Based on factors including but not limited to matchups, line combinations, power-play usage, statistical coverage and recent production, we'll provide you with lower-priced options that can help you build a winning lineup.

Nazem Kadri, C, Toronto Maple Leafs

DraftKings price: $5,500

Kadri should bring a lot of value to DraftKings owners on a four-game Wednesday. The second-line center leads the Maple Leafs with 141 shots on goal through 40 games and is always a viable threat to get some points skating with first-time all-star Leo Komarov, who leads Toronto with 15 goals. Kadri will try to keep his recent strong play going when the Maple Leafs face the Columbus Blue Jackets; he has 13 points (five goals, eight assists), 10 blocked shots and 44 SOG in his past 14 games.

Benson, Tkachuk named captains for Prospects Game

Vancouver left wing Tyler Benson and London left wing Matthew Tkachuk, each an A-rated skater on NHL Central Scouting's November players to watch list for the 2016 NHL Draft, were named captains Wednesday for their respective teams at the BMO CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.

The CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game will be played at Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver on Jan. 28 (9 p.m. ET; NHLN, SN, TVA Sports).

Benson will captain Team Don Cherry with alternate captains Jakob Chychrun of Sarnia and Julien Gauthier of Val-d'Or. Tkachuk will captain Team Bobby Orr with alternates Jake Bean of Calgary and Pierre-Luc Dubois of Cape Breton.

Benson's status for the game remains in question since he hasn't played since Dec. 30 after sustaining a lower-body injury. The Giants list him as week-to-week. At the time of his injury, Benson had 17 points in 13 games.

Rosen's mailbag - Jan. 13, 2016

Here is the Jan. 13 edition of Dan Rosen's weekly mailbag, which will run every Wednesday in the Over the Boards blog during the 2015-16 NHL season. If you have a question, tweet it to @drosennhl and use #OvertheBoards.

Let's get to it:

Some have written that John Scott should bow out of the All-Star Game. Do NHL rules mandate a suspension if he doesn't go? -- @hanesup

By the rules, Scott would be just like any player voted in or selected to go in that he would be forced to sit one game before or after the All-Star break if he bows out. However, as the NHL does with all cases, it considers all the circumstances involved -- for Scott that would mean how he got selected for the All-Star Game in the first place. It was a fan vote that got him in. He didn't ask for any of this. He seemed somewhat embarrassed by it too. With that in mind, my feeling is it would be highly unlikely that the NHL would force him to sit out one game if he were to bow out in order to have a more deserving player take his spot. But that doesn't seem like it's going to happen. This very likely will be Scott's only chance to participate in All-Star Weekend and to play in an All-Star Game. He should go. He should enjoy himself. He should bring his family, take pictures, yuck it up, and enjoy every last second of it because it really is a dream come true.

Weekes' pluses, minuses for Bruins, Flyers

Each Wednesday throughout the regular season, Kevin Weekes will be offering his pluses and minuses for the teams competing in the NBCSN Wednesday Night Rivalry game in his Weekes on the Web blog. Weekes also will assist fans with three must-watch elements of the game.

The Philadelphia Flyers have won three straight games following a three-game losing streak and are trying to get back into the Stanley Cup Playoff race. They got off to a slow start under new coach Dave Hakstol but seem to have adapted to the style of play he wants out of them.

The Boston Bruins have two wins in their past nine games and continue a five-game road trip where they're 1-1-1 so far. Boston is 12-4-3 on the road this season and hopes to get back on track against the rival Flyers.

The Bruins (21-15-5) visit the Flyers (18-15-7) at Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN). Here's my breakdown of the game:

Colton sets records at USHL Prospects Game

Cedar Rapids left wing Ross Colton, who is committed to the University of Vermont, scored a hat trick to lead Team East to a 6-2 victory against Team West in the 2016 United States Hockey League/NHL Top Prospects Game at Ralston Arena in Omaha, Neb., on Tuesday.

Colton, a native of Robbinsville, N.J., set a record for most goals and points (five) in the four-year history of the USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game. Named the most valuable player for Team East, he certainly made the most of his opportunity in front of numerous NCAA coaches and NHL scouts in attendance.

Colton (5-foot-11, 190 pounds), who had four goals and five points in five games for the U.S. Select Team at the 2015 World Junior A Challenge, has 18 goals and 33 points in 27 games for the RoughRiders in 2015-16. He already has equaled the 18 goals and 33 points scored in 58 games in 2014-15.

Coach's Challenge: NJD @ STL - 2:21 of the Third Period

At 2:21 of the third period in the Devils/Blues game, New Jersey requested a Coach's Challenge to review whether Ty Rattie interfered with New Jersey goaltender Keith Kinkaid before the puck crossed the goal line.

After reviewing all available replays and consulting with NHL Hockey Operations staff, the Referee confirmed no goaltender interference infractions occurred before the puck crossed the goal line.

Therefore the original call stands – good goal St. Louis Blues.

Since the Coach’s Challenge did not result in the original call being overturned, the New Jersey Devils forfeit their time-out.

Video Review: BUF @ MIN - 17:50 of the First Period

At 17:50 of the first period in the Buffalo Sabres/Minnesota Wild game, video review supported the referee's call on the ice that Brian Gionta's stick was at or below the level of the crossbar when he deflected the puck into the Minnesota net. According to Rule 38.4 (vi) "The determining factor is where the puck makes contact with the stick in relation to the crossbar. If the puck makes contact with the portion of the stick that is at or below the level of the crossbar and enters the goal, this goal shall be allowed." Good goal Buffalo.

At the Rink: Predators at Blackhawks

CHICAGO -- If the Chicago Blackhawks extend their winning streak to eight games with a win against the Nashville Predators at United Center on Tuesday (8:30 p.m. ET; SNE, SNO, SNP, FS-TN, CSN-CH+), they will help coach Joel Quenneville tie Al Arbour for second all-time in NHL regular-season wins with 782.

Earlier Tuesday, the Blackhawks (27-13-4) announced Quenneville had signed a three-year contract extension that runs through the 2019-20 season.

"We like what we have here and we want to keep it going," Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said. "Joel's played a big role in where we are and we're looking for that to continue."

Quenneville, who was hired as Blackhawks coach Oct. 16, 2008, said he also is excited. In eight seasons he's coached Chicago to Stanley Cup championships in 2010, 2013 and 2015, and hopes more are on the way.

"[It's been a] great beginning, but [it's] a tremendous group to work with, knowing your leaders have that type of character you hope to have on your team," Quenneville said. "They send the right message and you couldn't ask for a better situation to be in as a coach."
