Not a duplicate post: Ennis scores again

Abour four minutes after scoring on a breakaway, Tyler Ennis banged home a rebound to give the Sabres a 2-0 lead on Adler Mannheim in the first period.

If Ennis can continue this pace throughout the season, he will set an NHL record with 4,000 goals, give or take.

Hiller shines as Ducks maintain two-goal lead

After carrying the play during the first period, it was the Ducks' turn to chase in the second. Jokerit settled in during the first half of the second period, and then flat out took control of the contest in the second 10 minutes of the period.

Carolina Hurricanes property Tommy Kivisto cut Anaheim's lead to 2-1 on a goal with 1:04 left in the middle period. Ilari Filppula -- Valtteri's older brother -- found Kivisto near the inside edge of the left circle and he beat Jonas Hiller to the far side. Jokerit had created several chances just before the goal, and could have scored on a 4-on-2 had they not attempted about three passes too many in a fun but ultimately fruitless exhibition of puck movement.

Anaheim's Cam Fowler restored the two-goal lead before the end of the period. Bobby Ryan sent a pass from the left corner to a wide-open Fowler at the top of the circles and he scored with 5.9 seconds left in the period. The Ducks maintained their advantage, but only because Hiller had a great period.

In their exhibition game with Adler Mannheim, the Buffalo Sabres struck first.

Tyler Ennis scored on a breakaway during the first period to put the Sabres ahead 1-0. The goal came at 7:18 and not longer after the Sabres killed a penalty to defenseman Christian Ehrhoff.

Kings, Freezers deadlocked at 2-2 after one period

The Los Angeles Kings wanted a good tune-up for the regular season when they played the Hamburg Freezers Tuesday night at O2 World Arena in their final preseason game.

Well, they are getting just that. After one period here, the score is tied 2-2 as the Freezers have twice erased one-goal deficits.

The Kings got off to a dream start, scoring just 36 seconds into the game

Justin Williams' goal, on the first shot of the game, was a seemingly harmless wrister from the right circle that seemed to handcuff John Curry, the Hamburg goalie. Curry played the past several seasons in the Pittsburgh Penguins' system. This is his first year with Hamburg.

After carrying the play for close to five minutes, the Freezers were rewarded with a power-play goal that tied the game at 1-1. Former NHLer Serge Aubin, who played 374 NHL games for Columbus, Colorado and Atlanta, beat Jonathan Quick with a nasty shot from the slot with 7:09 left.

But on the very next shift, Alex Martinez restored the lead for the Kings, snapping home a brilliant feed from Dustin Brown, who used the wide ice of the Olympic-sized rink here to give himself some separation.

However, with a little more than two minutes remaining in the period, Kevin Schmidt, from Markham, Ont., pinched in from the point and received a perfect pass, which he fired over Quick's shoulder to tie the game heading into intermission.

Quick got the start for the Kings and he will play approximately half the game, according to coach Terry Murray. Jonathan Bernier will play the second half. Drew Doughty is making his preseason debut in this game after signing a new long-term deal late last week and has already made two good defensive plays.

Red Deer coach keeping close tabs on Nugent-Hopkins

Just because Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has secured a roster spot for at least nine regular season games with the Edmonton Oilers to open the 2011-12 campaign, doesn't mean his coach in Red Deer, Jesse Wallin, has lost contact with him.

"I talked to him quite a bit early on in camp just to see how he was doing," Wallin told NHL.com. "But I haven't been in touch with him a whole lot lately; just a text here and there to see how he's doing. It was his first camp and he enjoyed himself. It's all new and exciting and a great experience for him and he handled it really well."

Wallin was asked if he's torn between seeing Nugent-Hopkins make the Oilers roster or having him return to Red Deer for his third full season.

"You want the best for him and, selfishly, we'd love to have him back here," Wallin said. "So from that end of things, we'd absolutely want to have him back in Red Deer. But having said that, if he makes the Oilers, then that's what it's all about as well. We're here to develop guys for the NHL and that's our No. 1 goal and if he's prepared to make that step this year, than we've done our job and that's good for our program."

Nugent-Hopkins entered the 2011 draft as the No. 1-ranked North American skater on NHL Central Scouting's final list in April. He led the Rebels and finished tied for third in the WHL scoring race with 106 points in 69 games during the 2010-11 regular season while his 75 assists led all WHL players. He was also named Player of the Game for Team Orr at the 2011 Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.

"Ultimately, at the end of the day, what I want to see happen is what's best for Ryan and for him as a player," Wallin said. "It's about what's going to be best for him this year and not just for this season but for long term as well. I just think he's a very special talent and I think he's going to be a big time NHL player. I say that not only because of his ability but because of his personality traits … he's just got a real level head on his shoulders and has that type of personality that you see in real elite hockey players."

During Canada's National Junior Team development camp in August, Nugent-Hopkins was in the spotlight since the event was held in Edmonton. At the time, Canada head scout Kevin Prendergast said that Nugent-Hopkins had a better than 50 percent chance of making the Oilers. He also said it would be up to the player to convince Renney he's ready to take that next step -- but it won't be easy.

"If playing for the Edmonton Oilers benefits him long-term, than that's great and good for hockey and that's his dream and I'm sure that's what he's trying to accomplish and what he should be trying to accomplish," Wallin said. "But if benefitting him long-term requires he return to Red Deer, we'll certainly welcome him with open arms and continue working with him to get him prepared to make that step when he's ready."

Kings answer Freezers' goal, up 2-1

A pair of goals in less than a minute have brought live into this game after a slight lull.

Perry's pair has Ducks up 2-0 after one period

The Anaheim Ducks lead Jokerit 2-0 after the first period thanks to a pair of goals from the last season's Hart Trophy winner, Corey Perry.

Perry scored twice for the Ducks. The first was set up by one of the local heroes playing for Anaheim -- center Saku Koivu. The second, a one-timer on the power play, came on a pass from the other Finnish legend on the Ducks' roster, Teemu Selanne.

Perry nearly scored a third in at the end of the period, but his shot beat Jokerit goaltender Eero Kilpelainen after the horn sounded for the end of the period.

Anaheim took four penalties in the first, but Jokerit were unable to take advantage. The Ducks dominated at even strength, but Jokerit had a few good chances against goaltender Jonas Hiller with the extra man.

Hiller made a brilliant save on a one-timer from Janne Lahti after a nifty pass in traffic from Teemu Pulkkinen, who is Jokerit’s leading scorer this season and a recent draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings.

Rangers waive Avery, lose Weise to Canucks

STOCKHOLM -- Who knew that an arrival to a new city would be met with breaking news.

Not long after we touched down in Stockholm, Larry Brooks of the New York Post tweeted that Sean Avery was going to be placed on waivers at noon ET today. The news spread quickly, and a Rangers representative confirmed it to me shortly after it happened officially.

I wrote all about Avery and waivers in this story, but the gist of it is that he will be on waivers for 24 hours and can be claimed. If he is, the Rangers will be off the hook from paying him the $1,937,500 they owe him for the season.

If Avery goes unclaimed, the Rangers likely will assign him to Connecticut of the AHL. They would still have to pay him, but they would no longer have his salary cap hit.

Avery's agent, Pat Morris, told ESPN.com and The Sporting News that the 31-year-old left wing's future could be in Europe.

We'll see on that.

If that wasn't enough, Dale Weise, who had a strong camp but was cut and placed on waivers Saturday, was claimed by Vancouver on Tuesday. Weise could get an opportunity to play with the Canucks early this season due to injuries to Mason Raymond and Ryan Kesler.

Weise is a tough loss for the Rangers in terms of depth. He would have started the season in Connecticut, but also could have been one of the first forwards called up. Kris Newbury, Carl Hagelin, Ryan Bourque and John Mitchell also were cut Saturday.

Also, defensemen Stu Bickel and Brendan Bell were also put on waivers today.

That's a good sign that Michael Sauer is healthy and ready to go Friday, but if Bickel and Bell get claimed, the Rangers will have to bring in a new defensemen because Marc Staal is not coming and the only other healthy blueliners here are Michael Del Zotto, Dan Girardi, Ryan McDonagh and Steve Eminger.

Coach John Tortorella is expected to address the media in the Rangers' hotel lobby sometime this evening. I'll have more later.
