CALGARY, Alberta -- At the time, Calgary Flames defenseman Mark Giordano didn't think twice about his battle with Dallas Stars forward Antoine Roussel on Sunday night.

Upon review, he understands why the NHL fined him $10,000 on Tuesday for his slew-foot on Roussel in Calgary's 4-3 win over the Stars.

"I totally understand how it looks and it doesn't look great on video on the replay obviously and I'm happy the guy isn't hurt," said Giordano, a first-time offender. "Those plays around the boards, they do have to eliminate them. I guess I'll take the fine and more forward and try not to do stuff like that again."

The fine is the maximum allowed under the new collective bargaining agreement and goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

PITTSBURGH -- The dressing room is a different one because the old building across the street was torn down. But when Mark Eaton walked into the Pittsburgh Penguins locker room at Consol Energy Center, he felt right at home.

Eaton, a 35-year-old, 12-year NHL veteran, skated with the Penguins on Wednesday and will remain with the team he won the 2009 Stanley Cup with for at least the next few days.

Although Eaton did not sign a contract with Pittsburgh, he has spent the previous few weeks with the organization's American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, playing in six games with the Baby Penguins.

"I've always expressed interest (in joining the Penguins), and there's some interest on the other side as well," Eaton said. "Other teams in the League and guys have been doing this -- unsigned and kind of skating with the team to have them get a look at them. Hopefully I can impress a little bit and end up here. That's the long-term goal."

CALGARY, Alberta -- Playing the second of back-to-back games, the Los Angeles Kings are expected to start Jonathan Bernier against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome on Wednesday night.

Bernier will play in place of Jonathan Quick, who made 23 saves in a 3-1 win a night ago against the Edmonton Oilers -- his first win in four starts.

Coach Darryl Sutter didn’t confirm which goaltender would play, but captain Dustin Brown said the team has confidence in Bernier, making his fourth appearance of the season.

"That's the beauty of having two good goalies, especially on scenarios like this when you're playing back-to-back," Brown said. "Bernier's played well for us when he's gotten the opportunity this year. He's always come in and played well."

NEWARK, N.J. -- The New Jersey Devils are entering into a unique situation starting Thursday, playing consecutive regular-season games on the road against the same team.

Outside of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, players can't recall a similar situation since their days of playing junior hockey, but that's what they'll do against the Washington Capitals on Thursday night and Saturday afternoon at Verizon Center.

"It is a little different," said Devils forward David Clarkson, who will be in the lineup Thursday after dealing with tightness in his back following Monday afternoon's 2-1 shootout loss to the Ottawa Senators. "But I think with the schedule a lot of things are going to happen that you're not used to, so I think it'll be nice to get there and play tomorrow, have the day to practice and have no travel, so that will be good."

PITTSBURGH -- Dan Bylsma criticized a media member's choice of orange in his wardrobe. Then he talked of turning over framed pictures of Peter Laviolette.

Laviolette's counter? "Enough of this sentimental crap."

Just in time for the Wednesday Night Rivalry presented by Coors Light, the Pittsburgh Penguins host the Atlantic Division antagonist Philadelphia Flyers (7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN).

"Any time you play Pittsburgh," veteran Flyers forward Danny Briere said, "for us with the rivalry with them, it's not hard to get up for a game like that."

The player poised to be among the NHL's top free-agent goaltenders this summer is already off the market.

Viktor Fasth, the Swedish sensation who has posted an 8-0-0 record in his first NHL season with the Anaheim Ducks, has signed a two-year extension with the club that will run through the 2014-15 season. Per club policy, financial terms of the extension were not divulged, but Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register reported it was for $5.8 million ($2.4 million next season and $3.4 million in 2014-15).

NEWARK, N.J. -- New Jersey Devils forward Ryan Carter will not make the trip with the team for the its back-to-back road contests with the Washington Capitals on Thursday and Saturday.

Carter was involved in a collision during Monday afternoon's home game with the Ottawa Senators that left him with a head injury. He won't be available in either of the next two games; the team will not return home on the day in between the two games in Washington.

At practice Wednesday, rookie Stefan Matteau took Carter's place on the team's third line with Stephen Gionta and Steve Bernier.

New York Rangers forward Rick Nash isn't traveling with the team for Thursday night's game against the Ottawa Senators, according to multiple reports.

Nash didn't play in Tuesday night's 3-1 home loss to the Montreal Canadiens because of an undisclosed injury. He hasn't been ruled out to rejoin the team in time for Saturday night's rematch in Montreal.

If you're a fantasy owner who would gladly welcome a dual-eligible forward who is putting up nearly a point per game, then look no further than Colin Wilson.
