McDavid's season ends with loss in OHL Final

Connor McDavid, the top-ranked North American skater for next month's NHL Draft, saw his junior hockey season end Friday when the Erie Otters were eliminated from the Ontario Hockey League Final by the Oshawa Generals.

McDavid, the OHL playoff scoring leader, was held off the scoresheet in a 6-2 loss to the Generals in Game 5 at Oshawa. He finished the playoffs with 49 points in 20 games, two short of the League record set by Justin Papineau of the Belleville Bulls 16 years ago. McDavid won the 99 Trophy as playoff MVP.

First round of 2015 NHL Draft coming into form

The start of the conference finals not only means four teams remain in the race for the Stanley Cup. It also affects the first round of the 2015 NHL Draft, which will be held June 26-27 at BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla.

After the NHL Draft Lottery set the order for the first 14 picks, the end of the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs established how the next 12 picks will go.

The order is determined in two parts. First are non-division winners eliminated in the first two rounds placed in inverse order of regular-season standings. Then come division winners who lost in the first two rounds in inverse order of regular-season point totals.

Erie's McDavid named OHL player of the year

Erie Otters center Connor McDavid, the projected No. 1 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, was named the winner of the 2014-15 Red Tilson Trophy as the Ontario Hockey League player of the year, as voted by the writers and broadcasters that cover the league.

The announcement was made Tuesday at the Warner Theatre Grand Lobby in Erie, Pa.

"It's really hard to put into words what this means," McDavid said. "To be a part of this group of guys and … I might be the guy standing up there but this is the definition of a team award. Makes it a lot easier when you're playing with the league leading scorer [fellow 2015 draft prospect Dylan Strome] and the league's rookie of the year [Alex DeBrincat]. … It's a very special day to be recognized as the league's MVP. It means the world to me."

McDavid looks to rebound against Oshawa in Game 3

Erie Otters captain Connor McDavid, the projected No. 1 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, was held without a point in the Ontario Hockey League playoffs first time on Saturday in a 5-1 loss against the Oshawa Generals in Game 2 of the OHL championship round at General Motors Centre in Oshawa, Ontario.

McDavid, No. 1 on NHL Central Scouting's final ranking of the top North American skaters eligible for the 2015 NHL Draft, had scored a point in 16 straight games before being denied on Saturday. Top 2016 prospect Tkachuk signs with London

Matthew Tkachuk, a top prospect for the 2016 NHL Draft, has signed to play with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League in the 2015-16 season.

Tkachuk, a 6-foot, 188-pound left wing, was second on the United States National Team Development Program under-18 team this season with 38 goals and 96 points in 65 games. At the 2015 IIHF World Under-18 Championship he had 12 points in seven games to help the United States win the gold medal. Tkachuk tied for third at the tournament in points and his 10 assists tied 2015 draft prospect Jeremy Bracco for the tournament lead.

"I was leaning to this place a little bit more," Tkachuk said Friday, according to the London Free Press. "I made my decision when I started talking to my mom and dad after the U-18 world championship. I really just got to know the pros and cons of all the decisions. This place stood out to me after I talked to Dale [Hunter, London coach] and his track record. I'm really excited about being with this organization."

Matthews continues to mull options for 2015-16

Auston Matthews, the projected No. 1 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, still is mulling his options on where he will continue his hockey career in 2015-16.

Matthews confirmed Sunday that in addition to the NCAA and Canadian Hockey League route, he is considering playing in Switzerland. He didn't identify which team he was considering but did say it likely would be with a team in the top division of the Swiss professional league.

"I am looking at all opportunities," Matthews told NHL.com via a text message. "Switzerland, Everett [Silvertips in the Western Hockey League] and the CHL, as well as the NCAA are all great options for me. I am speaking with my family and advisers Pat Brisson and Judd Moldaver and will probably make a decision soon."

Erie's McDavid sets sights on OHL championship

What is the formula to stopping Erie Otters captain Connor McDavid in the Ontario Hockey League playoffs?

Oshawa Generals coach D.J. Smith hopes to that out beginning Friday when the Generals play the Otters in Game 1 of the Ontario Hockey League best-of-7 championship series in Oshawa.

McDavid, No. 1 on NHL Central Scouting's final ranking of the top North American skaters eligible for the 2015 NHL Draft, had eight goals and 19 points in a six-game series victory against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the conference final last week. He leads all playoff performers in the Canadian Hockey League with 19 goals and 42 points and is averaging 2.80 points per game in 15 postseason games. McDavid has at least one point in all 15 playoff games, the longest streak in the OHL since Taylor Hall had points in 16 straight games for the Windsor Spitfires in the 2010 playoffs.

That 2010 Windsor team with Hall, who went on to be taken by the Edmonton Oilers with the first pick of the 2010 NHL Draft, had Smith as an associate coach.

Erie's McDavid named OHL player of the week

Erie Otters captain Connor McDavid has been named the Pioneer Energy Ontario Hockey League Player of the Week after leading the league with 10 points in three games. It's the second straight week and third time in four weeks that he's won the award

McDavid leads all playoff performers in the Canadian Hockey League with 19 goals and 42 points, and has a point in all 15 playoff games. He had eight goals and 11 assists in a six-game victory against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the OHL Western Conference Final. It marked the second time in the Otters' 19-year history that they won the Wayne Gretzky Trophy to advance to the league finals and first time since 2002.

McDavid has tied the franchise record set in 2002 by Cory Pecker for points in a postseason and is nine shy of the OHL record of 51 points set by Justin Papineau in 1999 with the Belleville Bulls and Jason Dawe in 1993 with the Peterborough Petes.

Prospect Matthews caps big year with USA Hockey

Just when 17-year-old Auston Matthews thought his season couldn't get any better, he scored a goal for the United States Men's National Team in an exhibition game in late April at the 2015 IIHF Men's World Championship in Vienna, Austria.

It was a fitting way for Matthews to cap off an incredible 2014-15 season in which he established two records with the U.S. Under-18 National Team Development Program (USNTDP), earned a fifth-place finish for the U.S. at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship, and won a gold medal as an alternate captain for his country at the 2015 IIHF U-18 World Championship.

"Initially I was in awe; I was excited to play at that stage," Matthews said. "When I got there it was everything I could have imagined playing with NHL players like Trevor Lewis and Matt Hendricks and guys like that who are really established in the NHL. It was really cool and an honor to be around those guys. They were all super nice and very welcoming."
