Read back in Flyers lineup against Sabres

BUFFALO -- The Philadelphia Flyers will get Matt Read back in the lineup when they face the Buffalo Sabres at First Niagara Center on Tuesday (7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TSN). Read missed the past six games after sustaining a concussion against the Calgary Flames on Dec. 31. He has 10 goals and 19 points this season.

"He's an every-situation player for us," Flyers coach Craig Berube said. "Penalty kill, power play, 5-on-5. He's fast, has the ability to put the puck in the net, so he adds speed. Like I said, he's an all-around kind of player."

Berube said there wouldn't be any limitations and would use Read in all situations.

The Flyers arrived to Buffalo having lost their past two games by a combined score of 10-4.

Bruins' Thornton excited for first game back in Boston

BOSTON -- The Boston Bruins' home game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday will be more than just a homecoming for the team after a three-game California road trip.

It'll mark the first home game for forward Shawn Thornton, who returned from his 15-game suspension Saturday in the Bruins' lone win of their trip, a 1-0 victory against the San Jose Sharks.

Thornton's previous game was Dec. 7 when he was assessed a match penalty for an incident with the Pittsburgh Penguins' Brooks Orpik. A popular player during his seven seasons with the Bruins, Thornton should expect a warm welcome from the Boston fans.

Capitals' formidable stretch begins against Sharks

ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Washington Capitals are about to embark on what could be a season-defining stretch.

To close the January portion of its schedule the Capitals will play 10 games in 18 days, a daunting run that includes eight of nine on the road following their game against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday at Verizon Center.

"It just goes to show you that it's never over," coach Adam Oates said. "You win two in a row, you get a point against [the Buffalo Sabres in a 2-1 shootout loss Sunday] and before you know it you look and it's like, 'Oh wow, we have a tough schedule.'"

During their two-and-a-half-week grind the Capitals will face three back-to-back sets, the first of which begins Tuesday and continues against the Eastern Conference-leading Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday at Consol Energy Center.

Maurice ready for challenge as Jets' new coach

WINNIPEG -- Paul Maurice began his first day on the job as the Winnipeg Jets' new coach Monday.

The 46-year-old with 1,084 games behind NHL benches arrived in Winnipeg on Sunday night, met briefly with his new team Monday and then conducted the morning skate at MTS Centre prior to the game Monday against the Phoenix Coyotes.

Maurice has coached the Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes franchise on two separate occasions with the Toronto Maple Leafs sandwiched between. Maurice last coached in the League in 2011 before the Hurricanes replaced him with Kirk Muller. Maurice spent the 2012-13 season in the Kontinental Hockey League with Metallurg Magnitogorsk.

Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff reached out last week to Maurice, who has been working as a TSN studio analyst this season, to gauge his potential interest in taking over the Jets' coaching job for Claude Noel.

"It was very, very quick," Maurice said of his negotiations with Cheveldayoff. "Didn't take long. I wanted to be here."

Lightning's Stamkos continues to progress in rehab

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos continued to increase his rehabilitation Monday as he recovers from a broken right tibia.

Stamkos is with the team on its three-game road trip, which includes a game Monday at the Columbus Blue Jackets. According to reporters in Columbus, Stamkos joined the team late in its morning skate, then remained on the ice working on his own.

He wore a red jersey, signifying he's not allowed to receive contact. Stamkos skated laps around the ice, took shots and worked on shooting drills and practicing faceoffs.

Maurice to make Jets coaching debut against Coyotes

WINNIPEG -- The Phoenix Coyotes will become the latest team to see a new-look version of the Winnipeg Jets when they play Monday at MTS Centre.

The Jets fired coach Claude Noel on Sunday and replaced him with Paul Maurice. Maurice arrived in Winnipeg on Sunday evening and met with his new players briefly Monday before the team's morning skate.

Before Noel departed he shuffled the Jets' lines and defensive pairings several times. The changes culminated with the move of defenseman Dustin Byfuglien to the team's top line this past Saturday in Noel's final game behind the Jets' bench, a 6-3 loss against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Maurice shuffled the lines again Monday. With Evander Kane (hand) expected to miss his second straight game, Michael Frolik will join captain Andrew Ladd and Bryan Little on the first line. Byfuglien will skate with Olli Jokinen and Devin Setoguchi while leading goal-scorer Blake Wheeler will play alongside Mark Scheifele and Chris Thorburn. Forward Eric Tangradi (flu) missed the morning skate and is not expected to play.

Asked what he expects from his new team against Phoenix, Maurice admitted that he does not know what to expect.

"I'm going to be completely honest with you," he said. "Your guess is as good as mine."

Flames minus Cammalleri; Hurricanes will have Staal

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Already struggling for offensive production, the Calgary Flames will be without Mike Cammalleri against the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday after he sustained a concussion against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday.

"That's tough news for Cammalleri and for us," Calgary coach Bob Hartley said. "We all know what he represents for us. That's part of our business."

Cammalleri's 13 goals lead the Flames, who have scored one goal during their current three-game losing streak. Ben Street, who played eight games with Calgary at the start of the season, has been recalled from Abbotsford of the American Hockey League. He had one assist in his previous stint with the Flames.

"Don't make too much of the lines because [Monday] you might see a full buffet of lines," Hartley said. "We have a little overload at center so we will try some different combinations."

Bishop expected to back up Lindback for Lightning

COLUMBUS -- Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop is close to returning from a sprained right wrist that has kept him out of the past three games but all indications are backup Anders Lindback will play Monday against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

"No, I don't think so," was the response from Lightning coach Jon Cooper when asked after the morning skate if Bishop was ready. "We're going to give him a workout today and see how it goes. If not tonight, he's definitely a possibly for tomorrow (at the New York Rangers)."

The plan appears to be for Bishop to serve as the backup, though. Cedrick Desjardins told reporters he was going back to Syracuse of the American Hockey League Monday afternoon.

Bishop is 22-5-3 with a 1.86 goals-against average and was being pushed by some to be named to U.S. team for the 2014 Sochi Olympics, but he was not selected. Lindback is 5-9-1 with a 3.17 GAA and made 35 saves in a 6-3 win at the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.

Ducks' Getzlaf scratched with lower-body injury

ANAHEIM -- Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf was scratched from the game Sunday night against the Detroit Red Wings at Honda Center and is day-to-day with a lower-body injury, the Ducks announced.

Getzlaf took a shot off his foot in the second period Saturday night against the Phoenix Coyotes and did not return for the third period. Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said at the time that it was precautionary. Anaheim won, 5-3.

Getzlaf is having a Hart Trophy-like season and is the NHL's fourth-leading scorer with 23 goals and 30 assists in 44 games. He was selected to play for Canada at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

Dubnyk starting for Oilers, Blackhawks after sweep

CHICAGO -- Ilya Bryzgalov was supposed to start Sunday night at United Center against the Chicago Blackhawks, but Edmonton Oilers coach Dallas Eakins decided to scrap that plan.

Eakins said after his team's morning skate Sunday that Devan Dubnyk will get the nod after picking up a 4-3 win in overtime against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night at Rexall Place.

The Blackhawks (29-8-10) and Oilers (15-27-5) will conclude their season series with Chicago looking for a sweep after winning by scores of 5-4 and 5-1 in the first two games.

"We're going to go back with Devan," Eakins said. "As I've said before, your plans with goalies ... I shake my head at myself. Why even do it? It always changes. We are going to go back with Devan. We thought he played well and thought the team played well in front of him."
