Back with Penguins, Scuderi wants a third Cup

PITTSBURGH -- Rob Scuderi is making his return to the Pittsburgh Penguins after four seasons with the Los Angeles Kings. The Pens hope the veteran defenseman still can live up to his nickname, "The Piece."

Scuderi was known as a calming presence within Pittsburgh's defensive unit throughout its march toward the 2009 Stanley Cup. He served that role again in 2012 with Los Angeles, helping the Kings win their first Cup. Now he is expected to bring that quality back to the Penguins while paired with Kris Letang.

"I think guys look to you and hopefully you can be a good example, but I've always been the same person even before I won the Stanley Cups," Scuderi said. "I know it gives you credibility in the locker room and that's great, but there's a lot of guys that haven't won it that have it inside them and hopefully we're trying to find that."

Penguins' Bennett could see time on top lines

PITTSBURGH -- Beau Bennett, entering his second NHL season, is facing the possibility of playing alongside Evgeni Malkin, a Hart Trophy winner, and James Neal, a 40-goal scorer. But the young forward is content filling any role asked of him, as long as it means he makes the team.

"Sunshine," as he is referred to in the Pittsburgh Penguins' locker room, showed flashes of offensive brilliance during his rookie season, and had three goals and 11 assists in 26 games.

Entering training camp this season, Bennett could serve a prominent role on the Penguins' top two lines. He will compete with Jussi Jokinen for the open spot next to Malkin and Neal, but after multiple stints in the American Hockey League last season, he said he is focused on making the opening-day roster.

Rangers coach not concerned by Stepan's absence

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- As expected, Derek Stepan did not report to training camp with the New York Rangers on Wednesday as he remains a restricted free agent going through contract negotiations with the club.

Stepan is coming off his entry-level contract after leading the Rangers last season with 26 assists and 44 points in 48 games.

Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said Wednesday that he spoke to Stepan multiple times during the summer and he's not yet worried about him missing time in training camp because the players have not gone on the ice yet. Wednesday was reserved for off-ice medical testing; the first on-ice practice is scheduled for Thursday.

Biron not with Rangers at start of training camp

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- The New York Rangers announced Wednesday that goalie Martin Biron is not in attendance on the first day of training camp because of a personal matter and there is no timetable for when he will report.

"Marty is dealing right now with a personal situation," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. "I can't get into it. I'm not exactly sure what the time frame is on that. When he does come back he'll address it with you in a manner that he sees fit."

With Biron absent, the Rangers invited goalie Johan Hedberg to training camp on a professional tryout.

Senators in no rush to name new captain

The Ottawa Senators have an opening for the team captaincy, but coach Paul MacLean said there's no rush to fill it.

Talking with reporters in Ottawa on Wednesday on the first day of training camp, MacLean said "we're not making a decision" on the new captain at this time.

"I want to do it at the right time," MacLean said. "I want to make sure I do it at the right time."

Daniel Alfredsson had been captain since the start of the 1999-2000 season, but that ended when he signed with the Detroit Red Wings in July.

Brodeur having too much fun to talk retirement

Martin Brodeur is 41 and entering the final season of his contract, but the New Jersey Devils goaltender is not ready to discuss retirement.

"I'm just going to play this year," Brodeur told reporters at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., as the team opened training camp Wednesday. "I'm not going to comment on, 'Yes, I will,' or 'Yes, I won't [retire]'. So, you can tell [media] around the League they don't have to ask that question. I'm not going to tell anybody if I'm going to retire or not until I make a decision of coming back or not."

Instead of worrying about the future, Brodeur said he's concentrating on the present, and that includes helping his new teammate and goaltending partner, Cory Schneider, adjust to his new environment.

"For me, it's a fun opportunity to really help him out and it's going to help me out at the same time in playing games and doing these things with him," he said.

Devils' Jagr wants to continue playing

Jaromir Jagr said he isn’t ready to retire after the 2013-14 season. Although the New Jersey Devils' forward said Wednesday that, "it might be my last year," he said he prefers to keep playing, repeating that he will return to the Czech Republic after he leaves the NHL. Jagr said he also would like to play in the 2014 Olympics, but only if he and the coaches believe he can help the Czech team.

“I said it might be my last season [in the NHL],” Jagr said. “It depends how I’m going to play. I don’t want to be somewhere if I’m not going to be good or help. Of course, I’m going to play in the Czech league. I have to do it.”

Miller happy to be still be in Buffalo

After a summer of speculation and rumors, Ryan Miller said Wednesday he's happy to remain part of the Buffalo Sabres.

"Darcy [Regier, general manager] has to build a team and maybe he feels that he wants me here," Miller told reporters Wednesday in Buffalo. "I'm happy to be here obviously. I have a great connection with the city. I've enjoyed my time here. I'm just looking forward to getting started and do it all over again."

Miller went 17-17-5 in 40 games last season, snapping a seven-season stretch of at least 30 wins, and his 2.81 goals-against average was the highest of his career. Last season also marked the second straight season and fourth time in the last six the Sabres had missed the postseason.

"Last year didn't go the way we all were thinking," he said. "The last few years have been kind of frustrating, all culminating with [last season. I've been here a while and people are going to start focusing their attention on me, whether I should still be in town or not I guess. It all becomes about the same every year. You have to go out and prove yourself anyway. This falls in line with that. People expect me to have to go out and prove something but I would argue I have to do that every year as a goaltender for an NHL team. You have to go out and perform and play. You're not going to get any free rides. It's the same preparation for me."
