Elias is a healthy scratch and Jagr, who was forced to exit the opening day of training camp on Sept. 12 after experiencing "general soreness," will not play until he is feels 100 percent. Both players were not available at the team's morning skate on Monday in Newark.
The slight injury Brown suffered during an on-ice drill Thursday is located in his hamstring and shouldn’t have a major impact in preparations for the season, coach Darryl Sutter told LA Kings Insider.
"We're just going to be careful with [Brown]," Sutter said. "It's not very often a hockey player other than a goalie has a hamstring [injury], so I just want to be careful with him. ... Just make sure he’s getting ready for the end of camp."
BELLEVILLE, Ontario – Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele has experienced brief tastes of life in the NHL over the past two seasons. But the first-round pick (No. 7, 2011) said he believes he's ready to make the jump full-time.
Scheifele, 20, made it extremely difficult for Jets brass to send him back to the Barrie Colts in the Ontario Hockey League in the fall of 2011, when he scored his first NHL goal during a seven-game audition at the start of the 2011-12 season. But he was ultimately sent back to Barrie, where he scored 23 goals and 40 assists in 47 games.
He was held without a point in four NHL games last season and was sent back to Barrie after the Jets opted not to use a year on Scheifele's entry-level contract on the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season. Schiefele finished with 39 goals and 40 assists in 45 games for the Colts.
Washington Capitals center Mikhail Grabovski remains unable to practice with the team due to visa issues that have delayed his arrival to training camp, the Washington Post reported Friday.
The newspaper earlier said Grabovski would be able to practice Sunday, but now reports he will meet with the team in Belleville, Ontario, on Saturday, when the Capitals play the Winnipeg Jets in the 2013 Kraft Hockeyville game. He will then remain in Toronto, and Monday has a meeting at the United States consulate.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The advertising spot Patrick Kane did to promote the Bauer Vapor APX2 hockey stick was released Friday and became an instant hit online.
The video, which shows Kane stickhandling his way through three circular mazes of pucks at United Center, spread quickly. People shared it on social media sites in droves and almost all the comments were about the Chicago Blackhawks star right-winger's incredibly high skill level.
Kane never touches a single puck with either his stick or skates, despite more pucks being put into the maze as the video progresses.
GREENBURGH, N.Y. --Ryan Callahan's rehab from offseason shoulder surgery is going as planned, but that means the New York Rangers captain likely will have to start the regular season on injured reserve.
Callahan and Rangers forward Carl Hagelin each had shoulder surgery in late May after the Rangers were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Hagelin also is not expected to be ready for the start of the regular season.
The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed right wing Jared Boll to a three-year contract extension that keeps him with the club through the 2016-17 season, the team announced Friday.
"We started talking halfway through the summer," Boll told The Columbus Dispatch. "There was no rush; I still have a full year left. But I didn't care about free agency. I didn't even want to think about playing somewhere else. There was no reason for me to test free agency.
"The way this team is moving. The [Nathan] Horton signing this summer. The season [Sergei Bobrovsky] just had. The way we finished the season. The people we have in charge at the top. Just everything is headed in the right direction right now, and there's nothing I want more than to be a part of it."
GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- New York Rangers center Derick Brassard and assistant coach Scott Arniel have a rocky and controversial past, but they both insist any animosity that may have been lingering from their time together in Columbus was buried in early July, when Arniel was hired and Brassard called to talk to him.
“It's in the past and I'm looking in front of me," Brassard said. "I talked to Arnie when he got hired. I called him. No hard feelings."
Brassard and Arniel got embroiled in controversy early in the 2011-12 season when Arniel was the coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets and Brassard was their struggling center. Arniel made Brassard a healthy scratch seven times in 10 games from mid-November to early December both because Brassard was struggling and the Blue Jackets decided to test out their center depth.
GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- Even though Martin Biron reported to training camp Friday after missing the first two days because of personal reasons, the New York Rangers did not release Johan Hedberg from his professional tryout and coach Alain Vigneault said the two goalies are going to compete for the job as Henrik Lundqvist's backup.
"In an Olympic year I need a backup goaltender that can play games for us, whether that number is 15 to maybe 20," Vigneault said. "With the number of four games in six nights that we have to play and the number of three games in four nights, we need a backup goaltender that can play and win us some games. That's part of the equation to get into the playoffs and to be able to have a goaltender come playoff time that has got some energy and jump in his legs. Martin is aware of that. I had that discussion when he first got here. If we brought in Hedberg it was obviously to give him a chance."
The Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday began trimming their training camp roster, returning five players to their junior team and releasing two amateur tryout contracts.
Forwards Connor Brown (Erie, Ontario Hockey League), Fabrice Herzog (Quebec, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League) and Carter Verhaeghe (Niagara, OHL), defenseman Matthew Finn (Guelph, OHL) and goaltender Antoine Bibeau (PEI, QMJHL) all were returned to their Canadian Hockey League clubs.
In addition, forward Matt Rupert and defenseman Trevor Murphy were released from their tryout deals.
