Avalanche hold MacKinnon out of skate

The Colorado Avalanche held Nathan MacKinnon, the first pick of the 2013 NHL Draft, out of the team's morning skate Friday due to a hip flexor.

MacKinnon wasn't scheduled to play in the team's preseason game Frday against the Los Angeles Kings.

According to the team, a predetermined schedule has MacKinnon set to be in the lineup again Tuesday against the Dallas Stars.

Report: Jagr, Clowe absent from Devils practice

New Jersey Devils forward Jaromir Jagr was not part of either of two groups taking part in practice Friday, multiple sources reported.

Forward Ryane Clowe, who suffered what coach Pete DeBoer termed "a charley horse" in the first period of Thursday's preseason loss to the New York Islanders, also did not skate in either group. On Friday, DeBoer said Clowe was "day-to-day."

DeBoer told Northjersey.com that Jagr skated again on his own Friday and could return to practice "any day now." He left the initial practice of the season with what was reported as general soreness.

Sabres assign 12 players to AHL, return two to juniors

The Buffalo Sabres announced Friday that 12 players have been assigned to the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League.

Forwards Colin Jacobs, Eric Locke, Jonathon McGuire, Jonathan Parker, Kevin Sundher, Shawn Szydlowski and Frederick Roy, defensemen Alex Lepkowski and Matt Mackenzie and goaltenders Connor Knapp, Nathan Lieuwen and Andrey Makarov are now with the Amerks. Defenseman Nick Crawford, pending waivers, will also be assigned to Rochester.

Canucks assign three to AHL Comets

The Vancouver Canucks on Friday assigned centers Zach Hamill and Pascal Pelletier and left wing Colin Stuart to the Utica Comets of the American Hockey League.

All three players have past NHL experience. Hamill, the No. 8 pick in the 2007 NHL Draft, has four assists in 20 career games with the Boston Bruins. Pelletier is scoreless in 13 games with the Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks. Stuart has eight goals and 13 points in 56 games for the Atlanta Thrashers and Buffalo Sabres.

Roy praises Avalanche rookie defenseman Bigras

Following his first preseason game as the Colorado Avalanche's coach, Patrick Roy said he saw plenty of positives in his team's 2-1 loss Wednesday night to the Anaheim Ducks. He called it a "good step in the right direction" and lauded the team's 5-on-5 play. But no one earned more praise than 18-year-old defenseman Chris Bigras.

"There's nothing I didn't like [about his play]. Even when he was in trouble, he found a way to get back," Roy said on Thursday. "He's pretty amazing. I'm overwhelmed by him right now."

Predators trim training camp roster by 19 players

The Nashville Predators on Friday reduced their training camp roster to 42 players by reassigning three players to their junior teams, sending five players to Milwaukee of the American Hockey League and releasing 11 players from their tryout agreements.

Reassigned to juniors were Felix Girard (Baie-Comeau, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League), Mikko Vainonen (Kingston, Ontario Hockey League) and Tommy Veilleux (Victoriaville, QMJHL).

Penguins send goalie Hartzell to minors

The Pittsburgh Penguins reduced their roster to 43 players by sending goaltender Eric Hartzell to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.

Hartzell played in one preseason game, stopping all four shots he faced in relief of Tomas Vokoun on Sept. 16.

Hartzell, 24, signed with the Penguins out of Quinnipiac University and is entering his first professional season.

Stars' Glennie out 4-6 weeks with knee injury

The Dallas Stars announced Friday that forward Scott Glennie will be sidelined 4-6 weeks with a knee injury.

Glennie, a first-round pick (No. 8) in the 2009 NHL Draft, sustained the injury in the team's preseason game Wednesday against the Florida Panthers.

Glennie, 22, has played in one career NHL game at the end of the 2011-12 season. He had five goals and 14 points in 37 games last season for the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League.

Alfredsson, Franzen back at Red Wings practice

Forwards Daniel Alfredsson and Johan Franzen were back on the ice at practice for the Detroit Red Wings on Friday after both sat out an 8-2 preseason win over the Boston Bruins on Thursday with lower-body injuries.

In addition, forward Darren Helm skated for about half an hour before practice as he works his way back from groin and back injuries.

Anthony Brodeur among 21 reassigned by Devils

The New Jersey Devils reassigned 21 players on Friday, sending 15 to their American Hockey League affiliate and six others to their respective junior teams.

Goaltender Anthony Brodeur, taken in the final round of the 2013 NHL Draft, fell into the latter group, as he was sent back to Gatineau of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Also returned to juniors were forwards Myles Bell (Kelowna, Western Hockey League), Graham Black (Swift Current, WHL), Remy Giftopoulos (Windsor, Ontario Hockey League), Ben Johnson (Windsor, OHL) and Ryan Kujawinski (Kingston, OHL).
