Angela Ruggiero: 'I didn't know I could play hockey'

TORONTO -- An improbable hockey journey for Angela Ruggiero, which began inauspiciously as a 7-year-old throw-in on a youth team in California, concluded Monday night with her induction as an Honored Member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Despite all the accolades that have come her way as a collegiate player at Harvard University and as a member of the United States National Team, Ruggiero still was having trouble believing she was on the stage at the hockey hall of Fame, receiving her induction plaque from Cammi Granato, a teammate on the national team and a Honored member of the Hall of Fame herself.

"Wow, this is amazing," Ruggiero said.

Lightning's Killorn scores fantastic goal in loss

TAMPA -- Lost in the late comeback by the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final on Wednesday was Tampa Bay Lightning forward Alex Killorn's fantastic goal, a likely candidate for best of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Killorn was stationed to the left of Chicago goalie Corey Crawford as Valtteri Filppula won a race to a dump-in and fed the puck to the point, where defenseman Anton Stralman was waiting.

Stralman launched a bit of a knuckler that was going wide; that is, until Killorn violently jabbed his stick down and got the shaft on the wobbling puck to send it past a caught-off-guard Crawford at 4:31 into the game for a 1-0 Tampa Bay lead.

"I mean, you don't expect to score on those shots, but I was just trying to sort of hit it toward the net," Killorn said. "Not something you practice, but lucky it went in."

Ducks' Fleischmann in for Etem vs. Blackhawks

ANAHEIM -- The Anaheim Ducks may look a bit different when they take the ice against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday in Game 7 of the Western Conference Final at Honda Center (8 p.m. ET; NBC, CBC, TVA Sports).

It appears that veteran forward Tomas Fleischmann will replace Emerson Etem in the lineup for the second time during the series. Etem played in the first four games but was taken out for Fleischmann in Game 5. Etem returned to the lineup in Game 6, a 5-2 loss in Chicago.

Now Fleischmann is back in as coach Bruce Boudreau will opt for an experienced player he trusts. Boudreau and Fleischmann have a relationship that dates to the 2005-06 season when Fleischmann played for Boudreau with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League during the 2005-06 season. That spring Fleischmann had 11 goals and 32 points in 20 games to help the Bears to the 2006 Calder Cup championship

"I just think an experienced guy, he's been through these wars, he's played in Game 7s, he's been in championship games," Boudreau said of Fleischmann, who has one assist in five games in the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs. "Like I said, when I was with Hershey, it was a while ago but he was the MVP in the playoffs. So he knows what to do in these situations."

Ducks hope to put last year's lesson to use

CHICAGO -- The similarities to last season's playoff run are too strong to ignore, so the Anaheim Ducks have embraced the heartbreak as a teaching tool.

The Ducks lead the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 in their best-of-7 Western Conference Final heading into Game 6 on Wednesday (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports).

Last spring the Ducks had a 3-2 series lead against the Los Angeles Kings in the Western Conference Second Round but lost 2-1 on the road in Game 6 and then lost 6-2 at home in Game 7.

Los Angeles went on to win the Stanley Cup while Anaheim had a longer-than-expected summer of what-ifs.

Ducks coach Boudreau mulling changes for Game 5

ANAHEIM -- There is a chance the Anaheim Ducks could look a bit different for Game 5 of the Western Conference Final against the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Ducks had an optional skate Monday to prepare for Game 5 (9 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports) and did not show lines, but coach Bruce Boudreau would not commit to keeping the same lineup that has played in the first four games.

The best-of-7 series is tied 2-2.

"I don't know," Boudreau said when asked about the lineup. "It's one of those game-time decisions. We've told the guys coming for warm-up to be ready, you might be put in. We didn't tell anybody this morning that they're definitively playing. Everybody is coming prepared to play."

Blackhawks' Cumiskey likely to play in Game 2

ANAHEIM -- Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Kyle Cumiskey will likely replace David Rundblad for Game 2 of the Western Conference Final on Tuesday at Honda Center (9 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports).

Cumiskey has not played for the Blackhawks since Feb. 27, but Rundblad struggled in a 4-1 loss in Game 1 on Sunday. Cumiskey was playing for Rockford of the American Hockey League before he was called up for depth at the start of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

"Very likely," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said in his pre-game availability when asked about Cumiskey playing.

Ducks' physical style of play key to Game 1 win

ANAHEIM – The Anaheim Ducks are a physical team by their nature.

But, when the opportunity arises to weaken an opponent with a physical attack, especially in what promises to be a long series in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Anaheim will take full advantage of its opponent by playing the body as hard and as often as possible.

The Ducks were credited with 44 hits Sunday in a 4-1 win against the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 1 of the Western Conference Final at Honda Center.

Some were harder than others, like the hit by power forward Ryan Getzlaf that flattened Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook or the hit by pesky forward Ryan Kesler that temporarily knocked Chicago forward Bryan Bickell from the game during the second period, but all were with a purpose.

"We’ve got to invest in them physically," said Kesler, who finished with five hits, tied for the second-most on the team behind defenseman Clayton Stoner, who had seven. "When we got a chance to finish our check, we finished it. We didn’t pass up on any hits."

Rangers seek breakthrough against Holtby, Capitals

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The New York Rangers are desperate for goals.

In three games against the Washington Capitals in the Eastern Conference Second Round, the Rangers have four goals. In eight postseason games they have averaged 1.88 goals per game, second-lowest among the 16 teams that qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

It is a frustrating turn of events for the Rangers, who had little trouble scoring during the regular season; their 248 goals were the third-most in the League.

Rangers' Yandle focused on getting back to his game

WASHINGTON -- New York Rangers defenseman Keith Yandle did not have a good game Monday in a 1-0, Game 3 loss to the Washington Capitals at Verizon Center that gave the home team a 2-1 lead in the best-of-7 Eastern Conference Second Round series.

It went far deeper than the fact the game's only goal, by Capitals forward Jay Beagle, was scored while Yandle was on the ice, although that play was when his struggles perhaps were most apparent.

The Capitals were able to get in heavy on the forecheck and disrupt the tandem of Dan Girardi and Yandle, then Beagle was able to track down his own shot and circle behind the net unmarked before banking a shot off the skate of a late-reacting Yandle and past goalie Henrik Lundqvist.

Rangers' Nash won't let goal slump bring him down

WASHINGTON D.C. -- Not scoring goals in the Stanley Cup Playoffs is a reality of which New York Rangers left wing Rick Nash is all too familiar.

Once again he is looking to find a postseason hot streak as the Eastern Conference Second Round series against the Washington Capitals reaches Game 3 (7:30 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports). The teams split the first two games in the best-of-7 series in New York.

In seven games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Nash has one goal, which is the same total he managed during a 12-game playoff run with the Rangers in 2013. Last season Nash scored three goals in 25 games as the Rangers marched to the Stanley Cup Final, losing to the Los Angeles Kings.

In 48 NHL playoff games Nash has six goals. He scored 42 regular-season goals this season, the third-highest total in the League.
