At the Rink: Devils at Penguins

PITTSBURGH -- A few familiar faces will return to Consol Energy Center when the New Jersey Devils face the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday (7 p.m. ET; MSG+, ROOT).

Devils general manager Ray Shero will make his way back to Pittsburgh for the first time since being fired as Penguins GM in May 2014, and he'll be joined by several former Penguins players and employees. New Jersey coach John Hynes, who had coached Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, the Penguins' American Hockey League affiliate, will step behind the Consol Energy Center bench for the first time. Also playing for the Devils will be former Penguins forwards Lee Stempniak and Bobby Farnham.

"I didn't know," Hynes said about whether he figured to ever coach the Penguins. "I think it's one of those things where you always want to be able to concentrate on the job you're in. But at that point, when you're in the American Hockey League, you have some aspirations to go to the National Hockey League. But I didn't really try to overthink it too much."

At the Rink: Flyers at Penguins

PITTSBURGH -- Philadelphia Flyers forward Sean Couturier will not play against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Consol Energy Center on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; CSN-PH, ROOT) because of a lower-body injury.

Philadelphia announced Couturier's absence following its optional Thursday morning skate. He had missed practice Wednesday with what coach Dave Hakstol called a maintenance day.

Hakstol said Couturier was expected to play against Pittsburgh (21-17-7) following that practice, but said, "Things don't always go as planned," regarding his status a day later.

"There's a lot of things that guys go through on a maintenance day," Hakstol said. "I mean, find me one guy in this room that's 100-percent healthy. So nothing's really changed. Unfortunately he can't go tonight."

Hakstol said he will determine his line combinations following pregame warm-ups, including whether forward Jordan Weal will make his Flyers debut. The Flyers also recalled forward Sam Gagner was Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League.

At the Rink: Hurricanes at Penguins

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins will add forward Carl Hagelin to their lineup, but won't have defenseman Kris Letang when they face the Carolina Hurricanes at Consol Energy Center on Sunday (3 p.m.; FS-CR, ROOT).

Letang (undisclosed) was ruled out a day after missing practice because of an injury he seemed to sustain to his right arm when he was checked by Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ryan Callahan in the second period of Pittsburgh's 5-4 overtime loss Friday. After having X-rays between periods, Letang returned to finish the game.

Because of various injuries, Letang missed three different stints from Nov. 28-Dec. 30, returning on Dec. 9 and Dec. 26 just to miss the next game each time. Letang has 14 points in nine games since Dec. 26.

Pittsburgh is 1-7-1 playing without Letang. Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said he will again be a game-time decision when they face the St. Louis Blues on Monday.

At the Rink: Blackhawks at Penguins

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Trevor Daley and Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Rob Scuderi will each face his former team at Consol Energy Center on Tuesday (7 p.m. ET; SN1, SNO, SNP, CSN-CH, ROOT) for the first time since being traded less than a month ago.

Daley was traded to Pittsburgh on Dec. 14 for Scuderi midway through the Penguins' 4-1 loss to the Washington Capitals, which was Mike Sullivan's first game as Pittsburgh coach. Scuderi was expected to play against Washington, but was a late healthy scratch prior to his departure.

"We came in off the ice and [Scuderi] was nowhere to be found," Penguins defenseman Ben Lovejoy said. "I went and looked for him in the dressing room and he was getting changed, and he told us he had been traded. I gave him and big hug and said, 'Good luck.'"

After failing to score a goal in his 29 games with the Blackhawks, Daley scored in his second game with the Penguins against the Boston Bruins on Dec. 18. He scored a point in three of his first four games with Pittsburgh, but has been held without one in each of his past five, primarily playing alongside defenseman Ian Cole.

At the Rink: Islanders at Penguins

PITTSBURGH Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury will return against the New York Islanders at Consol Energy Center on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; NHLN-US, TVAS, SN, MSG+ 2, ROOT).

Fleury missed eight games with a concussion sustained sometime around his last start against the Washington Capitals on Dec. 14. During that span, goalies Jeff Zatkoff and Matthew Murray combined to allow three or more regulation goals twice, but Pittsburgh struggled to three wins.

The Penguins activated Fleury from injured reserve and reassigned Murray, who won two of his first four NHL starts with a 1.72 goals-against average, to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League on Saturday morning.

"[Fleury is] a big part of the team," coach Mike Sullivan said. "He's an elite goaltender. Having said that, Matt and [Zatkoff] have done a tremendous job. They made timely saves for us. But Marc, obviously, is the No. 1 guy and his body of work here speaks for itself, with how good he is. I know his teammates, I know how much they respect him, how much they like him and they play hard for him."

At the Rink: Maple Leafs at Penguins

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang will return to the lineup against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Consol Energy Center on Wednesday (7 p.m. ET; SN, ROOT).

Letang practiced Tuesday and was on the ice for the morning skate Wednesday. He sat out the 1-0 loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday because of precautionary reasons. He had played 28 shifts totaling 21:42 of ice time in a 3-1 defeat of the Minnesota Wild on Saturday, his first game back after missing six because of an upper-body injury.

During the morning skate, Letang skated alongside defenseman Olli Maatta and manned the point on the top power-play unit with forwards Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Phil Kessel and Patric Hornqvist.

Because of various injuries Letang has missed nine of Pittsburgh’s past 11 games. He was placed in the concussion protocol after taking a hit to the head from Wild forward Jarret Stoll on Saturday, but coach Mike Sullivan said the results came back negative.

At the Rink: Blue Jackets at Penguins

PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will not play against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Consol Energy Center on Monday because of a lower-body injury.

Crosby did not practice Sunday after earning three assists in his past two games, a 6-2 loss to the Boston Bruins on Friday and a 2-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday. Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said Crosby's status against the Blue Jackets was questionable Sunday, but confirmed he would not play a day later.

Sullivan said he does not believe Crosby's injury will be long-term.

At the Rink: Bruins at Penguins

PITTSBURGH -- In his second NHL game, Pittsburgh Penguins forward Conor Sheary could play alongside Sidney Crosby against the Boston Bruins at Consol Energy Center on Friday (7 p.m. ET; TVA Sports, NESN, ROOT).

Sheary was on Pittsburgh's top line at the morning skate, centered by Crosby with Chris Kunitz to their left. He debuted against Boston on Wednesday, when he played a majority of his 16:41 with center Evgeni Malkin and right wing Phil Kessel.

Penguins coach Mike Sullivan, who will seek his first win three games into his tenure with Pittsburgh, said the line combinations will change, with forward Nick Bonino (illness) returning after missing one game, but they will be a game-time decision. Sullivan, who coached Sheary while with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the American Hockey League, stressed Sheary's intelligence.

"Conor's got a real high hockey IQ," Sullivan said. "He's a good playmaker. He sees the ice well. He's very good in tight space. He can play that give-and-go game with whomever he plays with. And he brings a lot of energy."

At the Rink: Capitals at Penguins

PITTSBURGH – No lineup changes are expected for the Pittsburgh Penguins in their first game under coach Mike Sullivan on Monday.

During his first morning skate with the Penguins before their matchup against the Washington Capitals at Consol Energy Center, Sullivan used the same lines and defensive pairings former coach Mike Johnston used against the Los Angeles Kings on Friday. Sullivan said after his first practice Sunday that anything is on the table regarding the lineup, but he would most likely make more substantial tweaks as he becomes more acquainted with the players.

"As far as lineup decisions, they're going to be performance based," Sullivan said. "Those that play well will be rewarded for their play. So, I think that'll be something that as the games unfold here, we'll get a better assessment and a better feel."

At the Rink: Kings at Penguins

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins will be without defenseman Kris Letang when they face the Los Angeles Kings at Consol Energy Center on Friday (7 p.m. ET; SN1, TVA Sports 2, FS-W, ROOT).

Letang did not participate in the morning skate after playing 22:51 on 33 shifts against the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday. Letang missed two games, including the Penguins' 5-3 loss to the Kings on Dec. 5, with an undisclosed injury before returning against Colorado.

Penguins coach Mike Johnston said Letang sustained a separate upper-body injury against the Avalanche and will not be available for the next little bit.

"With the pairs, we will maneuver them around tonight depending on our matchups," Johnston said. "With Letang out, I think everybody knows what we miss in Letang, and what we need to make up. … Getting out of your zone is really critical against a team like Los Angeles."
