Phoenix Coyotes forward Raffi Torres has been suspended six times in his NHL career, including a 25-game suspension during the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs for a hit to the head of Chicago Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa.

Torres must sit out the first eight games of the 2012-13 season to finish that suspension, but when that's done, Torres hopes it's the final time he has to sit out due to NHL supplemental discipline.

"I can't afford to go through something like that again," Torres told the Arizona Republic. "There are some things that I'm going to have to change if I want to keep playing in this League at a competitive level, so I look forward to it. I know I can bring more to the game than just physical play."

The Minnesota Wild have agreed to a one-year, two-way deal with forward Nick Palmieri.

Palmieri had signed an American Hockey League deal to start the season and posted 9 goals and 19 points with 33 penalty minutes and a plus-9 rating in 36 games with Houston this season.

Acquired at the trade deadline last season from New Jersey, the 23-year-old Palmieri was scoreless in nine games with the Wild after he had four goals and seven points in 29 games with the Devils.

A third-round pick by New Jersey in the 2007 NHL Draft, Palmieri has career totals of 13 goals and 25 points in 87 games.

Booth suffered a groin injury Sunday during the off-ice testing phase of training camp, coach Alain Vigneault told the team's website. Booth underwent an MRI exam Monday that revealed the damage.

Veteran defenseman Colin White has been invited to St. Louis Blues training camp on a tryout basis, the team announced Tuesday.

White, 35, appeared in 54 games for the San Jose Sharks last season posting a goal, four points and 21 penalty minutes.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound White played his first 11 NHL seasons with the New Jersey Devils, winning the Stanley Cup in 2000 and 2003. Overall, White has dressed in 797 career games amassing 21 goals, 129 points and 869 penalty minutes as well as three goals and 17 points in 114 career playoff games.

The New Glasgow, Nova Scotia native was originally drafted by New Jersey in the second round (No. 49) of the 1996 NHL Draft.

The New York Islanders claimed defenseman Thomas Hickey on waivers Tuesday from the Los Angeles Kings.

Hickey was the No. 4 pick in the 2007 NHL Draft, but has yet to play in the NHL. He has spent the past three seasons with Manchester in the American Hockey League, and had three goals and 12 points in 33 games for the Monarchs this season. He is the only player selected in the first 16 picks of that draft to have not yet reached the NHL.

The Islanders have now added a pair of defensemen via waivers in as many days. They nabbed Joe Finley from the Buffalo Sabres on Monday. New York's depth on the blue line is lacking because Lubomir Visnovsky has yet to arrive at training camp after spending the lockout playing in the Kontinental Hockey League, and because Calvin de Haan is out for the season with a shoulder injury.

The Montreal Canadiens acquired defenseman Jason DeSantis from the Florida Panthers on Monday in exchange for defenseman Brendan Nash.

The 26-year old DeSantis played 32 games with the AHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs and San Antonio Rampage this season. He registered three goals, 11 points and 22 penalty minutes. The 5-foot-11, 185-pounder has recorded 16 goals, 81 points and 106 penalty minutes in 183 regular season games in the AHL.

A native of Oxford, Michigan, the USNTDP Under-18 product played four seasons, from 2004 to 2008, with the Ohio State Buckeyes totaling 16 goals and 60 points in 144 games.

Nash joined the Canadiens as a free agent on March 30, 2010. He played two games with the Canadiens in the NHL in 2010-11.

Philadelphia Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren told reporters Monday that forward Danny Briere has a hairline fracture in his left wrist and is "iffy" for the first two games of the season.

Holmgren said Briere had an MRI on Monday and is "healing." Briere had 34 points (10 goals) in 21 games for Berlin in the Deutsche Eishockey League during the lockout.

Briere could be a candidate to replace Jaromir Jagr on Philadelphia's top line this season, or he could help anchor the second unit. He had 16 goals and 49 points last season for the Flyers before adding 13 points in 11 playoff contests.

Buffalo Sabres prospect Zemgus Girgensons is expected to miss at least a week after absorbing a heavy hit in a game for Rochester in the American Hockey League this past weekend, according to a report by the Democrat and Chronicle and cited in the Buffalo News' Sabres Edge blog.

Girgensons, taken in the first round of the 2012 NHL Draft (No. 14), was checked by Syracuse forward Richard Panik in what appeared to be a late, blind-side hit, according to the reports. TJ Brennan, who was since called up to participate in the Sabres' training camp, then stepped in to fight Panik.

"I didn't like the hit," Brennan said in the Sabres Edge blog. "It was something you do where you stick up for your teammate."

Girgensons has three goals and nine points in 31 games for Rochester this season. He was taken two picks after Mikhail Grigorenko, who is taking part in Buffalo's training camp.

Florida Panthers forward Marcel Goc and defenseman Erik Gudbranson are unlikely to play in Saturday's season opener against the Carolina Hurricanes due to injuries, general manager Dale Tallon said via the team's official Twitter account.

Miami Herald reporter George Richards wrote via Twitter that Tallon also said Goc and Gudbranson are suspended until medically cleared.

Goc injured his ankle while playing in his native Germany during the lockout, while Gudbranson is recovering from shoulder surgery resulting from a wakeboarding accident back in September.

Another key member of the team, forward Sean Bergenheim, was also hurt while playing overseas during the lockout. Bergenheim suffered a groin injury playing in Finland, but according to a tweet from Richards is not currently suspended by the Panthers because the team has not determined the extent of his injury.

Forward Jonathan Huberdeau, who was selected No. 3 in the 2011 NHL Draft and has spent the past several months playing in juniors, did not practice Monday. Tallon said Huberdeau is fine and will practice Tuesday, according to Richards.

The Panthers, who won the Southeast Division last season and earned the franchise's first playoff berth in 12 years, also begin training camp without the services of young defenseman Dmitry Kulikov, who remains a restricted free agent. Kulikov has been playing for Yaroslavl Lokomotiv of the Kontinental Hockey League during the lockout.

The Vancouver Canucks added to their defense corps Monday with the free-agent signing of veteran Jim Vandermeer. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Vandermeer, 31, played in 25 games for the San Jose Sharks last season, recording one goal and four points along with 33 penalty minutes.

After going undrafted, Vandermeer broke into the League with Philadelphia back in 2002-03 and has played in 461 career games for the Flyers, Blackhawks, Flames, Coyotes, Oilers and Sharks, compiling totals of 25 goals, 105 points and 664 penalty minutes.

Vandermeer also has a pair of assists in 21 career playoff games.
