Rangers' Callahan back on the ice

New York Rangers captain Ryan Callahan joined his teammates on the ice for Monday's practice, wearing a yellow, non-contact jersey.

Callahan suffered a subluxation (partial dislocation) of his left shoulder Jan. 29 during a fight with the Philadelphia Flyers' Maxime Talbot.

The initial diagnosis was for Callahan to miss 10-14 days.

"It definitely could have been a lot worse than it was," Callahan said last Thursday when he learned of the diagnosis.

Luongo to start again Monday for Canucks

Roberto Luongo will once again be between the pipes when the Vancouver Canucks return to action Monday night.

Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault announced Sunday that Luongo will receive his third straight start when the Canucks face the Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place.

Luongo, 33, stopped 27 of 28 shots on home ice Friday night in Vancouver's 2-1 shootout win against the Chicago Blackhawks. That victory came two nights after Luongo blanked the Colorado Avalanche in a 3-0 victory. He is 2-0-2 with a 1.46 goals-against average and .944 save percentage in five games.

Cory Schneider, who was labeled the club's No. 1 goaltender prior to the start of the season, hasn't seen any action since allowing four goals on 27 shots in a 4-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks on Jan. 27. Schneider has a 3.13 GAA and .897 save percentage in four appearances.

Luongo has been the subject of trade rumors for several months. Canucks general manager Mike Gillis was in Washington on Sunday afternoon to watch the Capitals host the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Habs' Subban to make season debut

The Montreal Canadiens announced via their Twitter account that defenseman P.K. Subban will make his first appearance of the season Saturday afternoon against the Buffalo Sabres. It will be the 23-year-old's first game action since signing a two-year, $5.75-million contract with the team Monday.

The Canadiens' second-round pick in the 2007 NHL Draft led Montreal in ice time last season before holding out for the first nine days of the 2012-13 campaign as his agent, Don Meehan, and the club negotiated a new contract. Subban quarterbacked the team's power play last season and led the defensemen with 36 points, but Montreal has been surprisingly efficient with the man advantage in Subban's absence. They rank sixth in the League with the man advantage, scoring at a 27.3-percent clip.

"It's coach's decision. We'll see what happens tomorrow," Subban said Friday when asked about his eventual season debut. "I feel great. I've felt good for a while now. I've been skating non-stop for the last two weeks. I'm ready to go but at the end of the day it's not my decision."

Stars place Whitney on IR, recall Smith

Dallas Stars forward Ray Whitney was placed on injured reserve Saturday with a hair-line fracture in his foot and will miss 4-6 weeks, according to Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News.

To take his place on the roster, the Stars recalled Reilly Smith from Texas of the American Hockey League.

Whitney played 20:48 in the Stars' 4-3 shootout win Friday against the Phoenix Coyotes and also took a turn in the shootout. It's believed Whitney has been dealing with this injury since early in the season.

The 40-year-old Whitney leads the team in scoring with six points (two goals, four assists) in eight games.

Smith, 21, is second on the Texas Stars in scoring with 27 points (11 goals, 16 assists) in 38 AHL games this season. He has gone scoreless in six games for Dallas this season and is still looking to earn his first career NHL point.

Avalanche place Landeskog on injured reserve

The Colorado Avalanche have placed captain Gabriel Landeskog on injured reserve.

Last season's Calder Trophy winner has been out of the lineup since being injured in a Jan. 26 game against the San Jose Sharks, where he absorbed a heavy hit by defenseman Brad Stuart.

Landeskog, who appeared to take a shoulder to the head, limped toward the dressing room and missed the rest of the first period before returning for the second. He ended up playing 16:23 in that game and spoke to the media afterward.

Panthers' Upshall out for 'several weeks'

Florida Panthers coach Kevin Dineen told reporters Friday that forward Scottie Upshall would be out of the lineup for several weeks due to a lower-body injury.

Upshall was injured during a third-period fight with the Winnipeg Jets' James Wright during Thursday's 6-3 victory. Upshall delivered a high hit to Winnipeg's Zach Redmond, and then was engaged by Wright. After the fight, Upshall needed help leaving the ice. He did not return to the game.

In seven games this season, Upshall has one power-play goal and a minus-4 rating.

Struggling Capitals turn back to Holtby

The Washington Capitals, stuck at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings and desperately in need of a win, will turn back to Braden Holtby as their starting goaltender for Friday night's game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

After leading the Capitals to Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the New York Rangers last spring, Holtby started Washington's first two games this season. He allowed 10 goals on 73 shots and has not seen action since, with Michal Neuvirth starting the next five games.

"It'll be good, obviously. I'm looking forward to playing again," Holtby told reporters. "We need a big win and I think we all know that. I believe our group is just taking it like another game, trying to keep our emotions down to do the right things."

After blowing a third-period lead against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday, the Capitals are 1-5-1 this season. Holtby, whose prior start came Jan. 22 against Winnipeg, has an 0-2 record with a 5.04 goals-against average and .863 save percentage.

"It's different not playing for a while, but I don't think that'll affect anything right now," he said. "We need a win and all that other stuff doesn't matter, how many days between starts, how we played before. Right now I have to focus on giving our team the best chance we can to win and see where it takes us."

Thornton has played in all seven games for Boston this season and has one goal and 25 penalty minutes.
