Crawford in for Blackhawks

Corey Crawford will start in goal Sunday for the Chicago Blackhawks against the Detroit Red Wings (12:30 p.m. ET, NBC, NHLN-CA).

It will be Crawford's first start since Feb. 28, when he left that game after one period with what the team called an upper-body injury.

Crawford is 9-0-3 in 12 games, with a League-leading 1.46 goals-against average. He's also second with a .946 save percentage.

And while Blackhawks center Dave Bolland will sit out Sunday -- the fifth straight game he's missed, due to an upper-body injury -- he is expected back in the lineup for Tuesday's home game against the Minnesota Wild.

In 16 games this season, Bolland has five goals and two assists.

O'Reilly likely to play for Avalanche on Sunday

Ryan O'Reilly appears set to make his season debut for the Colorado Avalanche.

O'Reilly skated with the Avalanche at practice Saturday, two days after the team matched the offer sheet he signed with the Calgary Flames, and the Denver Post reports he will play Sunday at the Columbus Blue Jackets.

"Hopefully I can contribute as best I can," O'Reilly said after practice. "It will probably take a while to get back in the swing of things, just find the chemistry, to catch up to the speed of the game. ...

"I feel good, I'm skating as hard as I can, I feel healthy. I'm just hungry, I can't wait to be playing hockey again."

Vanek sidelined Saturday with upper-body injury

Buffalo Sabres leading scorer Thomas Vanek will miss Saturday's game against the New Jersey Devils with an upper-body injury.

Sabres coach Ron Rolston is hopeful Vanek can return to the lineup for Sunday's game at the New York Rangers.

Brian Flynn was called up from Rochester of the American Hockey League and will make his NHL debut.

Vanek has 12 goals and 15 assists for 27 points, good for third in the League scoring race.

Malkin does off-ice workouts second straight day

Pittsburgh Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said injured center Evgeni Malkin has done off-ice workouts each of the past two days.

"Evgeni Malkin has been working out the last two days, not skating, back in Pittsburgh," Bylsma said Saturday before his team played the Montreal Canadiens.

Bylsma said there was no medical reason Malkin did not skate Saturday, that it was an ice-availability issue. He suffered a concussion in a Feb. 22 game against the Florida Panthers and was placed on injured reserve Sunday.

O'Reilly will practice with Avalanche on Saturday

The Colorado Avalanche announced Friday that center Ryan O'Reilly has been medically cleared to play and will practice with the team Saturday.

O'Reilly, a restricted free agent, signed a two-year, $10 million offer sheet with the Calgary Flames on Thursday. Hours later, the Avalanche matched the deal, allowing them to retain O'Reilly.

Senators' Anderson continuing to work his way back

Ottawa Senators goalie Craig Anderson, who has missed the past three games with a sprained ankle, continued on his road to recovery Friday when he practiced with teammates in Ottawa.

Anderson was off to a superb start before getting hurt in the third period of a victory against the New York Rangers on Feb. 21 in Ottawa. In 15 starts, he was 8-4-2 with a 1.49 goals-against average and .952 save percentage.

"Every day seems to be getting a lot better," Anderson told the team's website Friday. "I can skate, I can stop, I can push, I can do a lot of things that a forward can do. I haven't taken the step yet to see what a goalie can do. I think that's going to be the next step -- see how it is [Saturday] and see if I can get into the butterfly at all."

In Anderson's absence, Ben Bishop and Robin Lehner have split time in net. Senators coach Paul MacLean already has said Bishop would start Saturday's game at the Philadelphia Flyers.
