NHL Agrees to a Hall of Fame
Sept. 11, 1943: The idea of a Hockey Hall of Fame was officially approved by the NHL. Lord Stanley, Hobie Baker, Art Ross and Georges Vezina were among the 12 hockey luminaries to be honored as charter members in 1945. Despite continuing to induct members, an official building to house the hockey immortals would not be opened until Aug. 26, 1961 on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition.
