Joe Louis Arena continues to be an impossible place for visiting teams to win -- even when they're spotted a two-goal lead.

Detroit got goals by Pavel Datsyuk and Niklas Kronwall 56 seconds apart midway through the third period Tuesday night as the Red Wings rallied to beat the St. Louis Blues 3-2 for their 11th consecutive victory at home.

St. Louis led 2-0 on power-play goals by Matt D'Agostini and Alexander Steen with time running down in the second period. But Nicklas Lidstrom gave the Wings some life when his one-timer from the left point went through traffic and past Brian Elliott with 1:03 remaining, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Datsyuk tied the game with 8:41 left, deflecting Ian White's shot out of the air off the rush for his 12th goal. Kronwall then got the game-winner by firing a wrist shot from the left point past Elliott with 7:45 remaining.

"In the third we just tried to throw everything we could at them," Kronwall said, "and it worked out in the end."

Elliott and Detroit's Jimmy Howard both finished with 29 saves, but the Blues lost in regulation for the first time in 18 games when taking a lead into the third period and fell one point behind the Wings into third place in the Central Division.

"You're up on the road, you've just got to finish, playing a clear concise game," Elliott said. "We didn't do what we needed to do in the third period and that cost us."

D'Agostini gave the Blues a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 6:51 of the opening. He tipped Kevin Shattenkirk's shot from the point out of the air and past Howard for his eighth goal.

Steen made it 2-0 with another power-play effort with 6:52 left in the middle period. Howard seemingly had Jason Arnott's shot in his pads, but the puck trickled between the goaltender's legs. Steen found the loose puck and slid it into the wide-open net for his 13th goal. It was only the 16th power-play goal of the season for the Blues, but five have come against Detroit.

"To me that was a real good hockey team," Wings coach Mike Babcock said of the Blues. "They've got a real nice team. They're playing hard and they're playing well.

"We were down 2-0 to a good team that doesn’t give up a lot of shots, a lot of opportunity. We worked our way back, had good goaltending. That power-play goal at the end of the second was huge for us, got us settled down and playing again, and were real determined in the third."

Shattenkirk and Arnott both finished with two assists.

"They dialed it up in the third and forced us into making mistakes," St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock said.

Howard's 29 saves included a tremendous sprawling save on D'Agostini in the second period and another on a 3-on-1 break.

"I thought Howie had to stand on his head a little bit while we gave up ugly rushes for no reason," Babcock said. "Then we scored a big power-play goal, settled in and had a great third period."

The Blues, who won the first two games of the season series against the Wings at home, are back in Detroit for the Wings' traditional New Year's Eve game on Saturday.
