The Colorado Avalanche have turned into road warriors.
Colorado has won in Boston, Columbus, Ottawa and Montreal is a six-day span. The Avs go for the sweep Monday night against the unbeaten Maple Leafs in Toronto. The win in Columbus also came in a shootout -- and after beating the Canadiens, the Avs are now 13-1 in their last 14 tie-breakers.
"We have a pretty skilled team," center Paul Stastny said.
"Four-on-four we're pretty confident. We've always had good goaltending at breakaways and we can always count on at least one goal out of three. In a game like this I think sometimes that's just what you want to take it into and go from there. It's kind of a coin toss, but we're confident enough to think that we'll be favored if we go into a shootout."
The Avalanche got two goals from David Jones, but couldn't hold onto three one-goal leads and needed a goal by Kyle Quincey with 4:03 remaining in regulation to force overtime. After neither team scored during the extra five minutes, Hejduk and Duchene scored while Semyon Varlamov stopped Tomas Plekanec and Matt Pacioretty missed the net.
Brian Gionta and David Desharnais scored goals 20 seconds apart in the third to give Montreal a 5-4 lead with 6:43 left in regulation, only to have Quincey tie the game. Stastny and Chuck Kobasew also had goals for Colorado, while Varlamov stopped 38 shots.
Pacioretty, Plekanec and Travis Moen had the other goals for the Canadiens, who have lost three of four and are 0-2-0 at home. Carey Price made 24 saves but was denied for in his second bid for win No. 100.
The Canadiens trailed 4-3 before Gionta put a backhander past Varlamov to tie it 12:57 into the third. Desharnais deflected Pacioretty's pass into the right side of the net for his first goal of the season 50 seconds later, triggering a roar from the sellout crowd of 21,273 at the Bell Center.
"It was a roller-coaster," Price said. "I thought the guys played well and deserved better. It was a tough one for me tonight, obviously, with five goals. I wish I would have played better but at least we got a point out of it. We can move forward with that, I guess."
Jones set up Kobasew's first goal with Colorado in the opening period, then scored twice in the second. He tied it 2-2 at 11:37 with a power-play wrister off a pass from Erik Johnson, then gave the Avs a 4-3 lead at 18:42.
Stastny made it 3-2 with an unassisted goal 54 seconds after Jones' first tally, stripping P.K. Subban at center ice and beating Price on a breakaway with a backhander through the pads.
"I saw the puck was in my range and just made a quick poke at it and went with it," Stastny said.
Moen tied it 3-3 at 15:51 into the second when he took Gionta's pass and drove down the left side before beating Varlamov inside the left post.
