Oilers hand Sharks sixth consecutive loss
Edmonton Oilers 5, San Jose Sharks 2
The slumping Edmonton Oilers found a team that's struggling even more than they are.

Taylor Hall scored twice and Devan Dubnyk made 41 saves Thursday night as the Oilers won for just the second time in 11 games by beating the San Jose Sharks 5-2.

"It was a fun night," said Hall, who has 14 goals and 12 assists in 42 NHL games. "It could have been a huge night, but first and foremost we played well as a team and got the win."

There wasn't much fun on the home side. It was the Sharks' sixth loss in a row -- their longest losing streak in 15 years -- and their sixth consecutive defeat at home, something that hasn't happened in almost 14 years.

"It probably sounds like a broken record and there's not a lot to say," forward Ryane Clowe said. "Maybe we just have to get it together. Right now there are no easy games."

Dustin Penner, Andrew Cogliano and Linus Omark also scored for Edmonton, which led 3-0 after two periods and snapped a three-game slide on the road. Ales Hemsky had four assists for the Oilers, giving him 10 points in his last eight games. Omark scored his second goal of the season his first in nine games.

"We played hard again tonight," coach Tom Renney said. "We played hard and did everything we can to play the game on our toes you'll be competitive at least."

Joe Thornton and Clowe scored third-period power-play goals for San Jose, which remained in 11th place in the West, three points out of a playoff berth. Thornton has six goals in his last 34 games after scoring five in his first eight.

Coach Todd McLellan took responsibility for not having his team ready.

"I'm the leader of this team," he said. "I'm the coach, and it's my responsibility to make sure that they're prepared to play. After that, it becomes an individual's responsibility. And, right now, I'm not doing a very good job. So, they need to step up a little bit. I need to a better job, find better buttons to push, but I am the leader of this group, and I have to do a better job."

Cogliano got the Oilers on the scoreboard at 15:34 of the first period, taking a pass from Liam Reddox and beating Antero Niittymaki on a shot into the upper-right corner. Penner made it 2-0 at 3:50 of the second when he caught Niittymaki out of position and beat him with a shot to the right corner.

At 15:36, Hall got his first goal after a video review. He poked the puck into Niittymaki's glove and it slid out and just barely crossed the goal line. That sent many in the sellout crowd of 17,562 heading for the exits.

"Taylor is just a fearless kid that wants the puck, plays the game, knows where the net is, navigates the ice extremely well and he certainly does not look out of place," Renney said of the No. 1 overall pick in last June's draft, who now has 14 goals

The Sharks showed more energy in the third, and Thornton broke up Dubnyk's shutout bid at 5:55. But Omark scored at 9:14, making Clowe's power-play goal with 49 seconds little more than window dressing. Hall hit the empty net with less than 3 seconds left.

"They came at us a few times, had us in our own end, but we did not panic," Renney said. "They got inside of us a couple times but we really battled to work ourselves in the proper position."
