Ducks trounce Blue Jackets 6-0
Columbus Blue Jackets 0, Anaheim Ducks 6

It was a breakout night for the Anaheim Ducks.

Two nights after a 4-1 clunker against Nashville, the Ducks broke out of a scoring slump and beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-0 on Friday night. It was their biggest margin of victory anywhere since Nov. 9, 2006, at Vancouver, and their biggest home margin of victory since beating Calgary 7-0 on Dec. 20, 1996.

Teemu Selanne and Bobby Ryan broke out of individual scoring slumps with a pair of goals each, and Jonas Hiller stopped 27 shots for his ninth career shutout.

"We were down and dropped a dud during the homestand," said Ryan, referring to the loss to Nashville. "It's an important time of year not to do that. Tonight revealed a lot of character about the team in the way we bounced back. You got a 20-man effort all the way through. It was nice to see guys stick together."

Anaheim has won four of five to remain in a tightly packed Western Conference playoff scramble that has 10 teams within five points of one another from fourth to 13th place.

Selanne opened the scoring 5:48 into the game, taking a pass from Saku Koivu pass at the top of the right circle and one-timing it under goalie Steve Mason.

The 40-year-old made it 2-0 at 7:02 of the middle period, taking a cross-ice pass from rookie defenseman and slapping it past Mason on the near side.

"We tried to shoot the pucks and had good screens in front of the net," Selanne said. "We did a better job in that area. The power play and penalty kill, we know that if we can do a good job in those areas, we are going to win a lot of games."

It marked the 121st career multi-goal game for Selanne, but his first of the season.

"My timing has been better lately," Selanne said. "My own game, I haven't really gotten the bounces that I have wanted lately. That is why it was a good feeling to get a couple in."

Matt Beleskey added a second-period goal, and Ryan scored twice in the third before Logan McMillan capped the scoring with a shorthanded goal.

"The feeling was great in the third period," Ryan said. "Guys were loose. You need that sometimes, games like that to boost some confidence. Hopefully it will get the train flowing offensively. "

There were no smiles in the visiting locker room after the Blue Jackets missed a chance to climb from 13th to eighth place in the Western Conference playoff scramble. The Blue Jackets are 1-8-2 in their last 11 road games after an 8-1 start that included a 4-3 win at Anaheim on Nov. 19.

"Once that third goal went in, it took the wind right out of us," Jackets coach Scott Arniel said. "I thought when we were down 2-0, we were getting a lot of chances, a lot of opportunities, but we couldn't get one past Hiller. It got ugly after that (third goal).

"We had a lot of opportunities and we didn't bury them. When things are going bad, that's what happens."
