Rangers outlast Stars 3-2 in shootout
New York Rangers 3, Dallas Stars 2
The littlest New York Ranger continues to make a big impact.

Rookie Mats Zuccarello scored the only goal in the shootout and Henrik Lundqvist stopped all three Dallas shooters as New York beat the Stars 3-2 on Friday.

Two nights after scoring his first NHL goal to give the Rangers an overtime victory against Carolina, the 5-foot-7 Norwegian rookie used a hesitation move to beat Dallas goaltender Kari Lehtonen in the second round of the tie-breaker. Lundqvist stopped Jamie Benn, Brad Richards and Mike Ribeiro to give the Rangers the extra point.

"It's a great feeling to secure the victory for the team, but Hank saved the three shots so he's the big key for us today," Zuccarello said. "And all of the other guys who played a helluva road game, and grinded it out for 65 minutes, helped us get these two points."

Dallas took leads on a first-period goal by Brian Sutherby and a second-period power-play goal by Ribeiro. But the Rangers got a shorthanded goal by Ruslan Fedotenko to make it 1-1 and forced overtime when Artem Anisimov scored a power-play goal 8:04 into the third period.

The Rangers, who picked up their League-high 14th road win, improved to 5-9-3 when trailing after two periods.

"It's so good for our confidence, and doing it a few times then you just know you can do it," Lundqvist said. "The key is not to open up just because you are trailing. Sooner or later you will get your chances to score. We are confident when we are behind that if we play good defense then when we get our chances we will bury it."

Lehtonen stopped 29 shots for the Stars, who have won their last six on the road but are 0-3-2 in their last five at home.

"We had a lot of good things in the game. We should probably focus in on the good things," Stars coach Marc Crawford said. "But when you're striving for these points, I guess it's human nature, especially coaches' human nature, to pick at the sores that we've got in our game. We've got to get past that.

"In the end, it's a pretty important point, but we had our hearts set and our minds set on getting this thing righted at home. It's five games now where we haven't won at home."

Sutherby took advantage of a turnover on a clearing attempt by Lundqvist for the only goal of the first period. Brandon Segal picked off the pass along the boards behind the net and fed Sutherby for a one-timer from the right circle that beat Lundqvist at 7:55.

Fedotenko tied it 2:49 into the second period, beating Lehtonen with a sharp-angled shot from the right side with 11 seconds left on a Dallas power play.

Ribeiro made it 2-1 at 10:20, scoring from low in the left circle off a pass from Loui Eriksson. But Anisimov capitalized on a boarding penalty to Segal and beat Lehtonen from the right circle to get the Rangers even again.

"I thought we played a great road game," Lundqvist said. "We kept it very simple against a team that has been playing very good hockey. We gained momentum as the game moved on and got a big win."

Dallas' newest acquisition, forward Jamie Langenbrunner, was at the game but did not dress. Langenbrunner, a former Star acquired from New Jersey on Friday, is expected to play in Sunday's game at Minnesota.
