Giroux nets pair as Flyers win in Pittsburgh again
Philadelphia Flyers 3, Pittsburgh Penguins 2
Claude Giroux is fast becoming a shorthanded specialist.

Giroux scored for the third time this season with Philadelphia a man down, and he later added a power-play goal that held up as the game-winner as the Flyers beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 on Friday night for their second win this month at the new Consol Energy Center.

Rookie goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky made 26 saves and Daniel Carcillo also scored for the Flyers, who moved into a first-place tie with the Penguins in the Atlantic Division.

Kris Letang opened the scoring for the Penguins and Tyler Kennedy made for a frantic finish when he one-timed a Sidney Crosby feed past Bobrovsky with 45 seconds remaining. But the Flyers survived from there to claim the one-goal victory.

With the Pennsylvania rivals meeting for the third time in 23 days, the game got off to a chippy start. There were a pair of fights and six other minor penalties in the first four minutes of the game, leading to various brief power plays for each side and even a prolonged 3-on-3 skating situation.

"It was actually kind of difficult just because it was constantly pausing in the beginning -- stops and stops," Bobrovsky said.

Danny Briere of the Flyers was in the box for high-sticking when Giroux wiped out a 1-0 deficit early in the second period. Giroux, who didn't have a shorthanded goal to his credit prior to this season, took a pass from captain Mike Richards and beat Marc-Andre Fleury on a backhander to knot the score.

"I'm not so sure how he saw me, but it was right on my tape and I was able to beat him," Giroux said.

Carcillo put Philadelphia ahead to stay at 13:34 when he redirected a Matt Carle shot and Giroux tallied the all-important insurance goal midway through the third. Pittsburgh was assessed a bench minor at 10:32 for too many men, and it took just 11 seconds for Giroux to push the puck past Fleury off a scramble in front.

"That's kind of been our story for a little while, we're not following it up," Penguins forward Mike Rupp said. "We had a rough second period and didn't seem to get it after that."

Fleury made 21 saves in falling to 1-5-0 this season -- his backup, Brent Johnson, is 4-0-1 and has stolen his fair share of playing time with his strong start.
