Ryan gets pair as Ducks beat Stars 5-2
Anaheim Ducks 5, Dallas Stars 2

The Anaheim Ducks made the most of their opportunities and made the Dallas Stars pay for their mistakes.

Bobby Ryan had two of Anaheim's three second-period goals as the Ducks overcame a poor first period and beat the Stars 5-2 on Tuesday night.

Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said Ryan, the No. 2 pick behind Sidney Crosby in the 2005 Entry Draft, was a difference-maker.

"At times he looked like the best player on the ice," Carlyle said. "He was skating -- and when he does that, he's a dynamic player."

Anaheim's Teemu Selanne scored the 611th goal of his career to put Anaheim ahead 4-2 in the third period -- passing Bobby Hull for 15th place on the all-time NHL goal-scoring list in the process.

"I've met (Hull) many times, and I never imagined I'd score more goals than him," said the 40-year-old Selanne, who also had an assist to give him 801 points with the Ducks. "It's unbelievable, when you look back at your career, the numbers. Good things happen when you play long.

"When I read my name in the same story with Bobby Hull or somebody else, it's a big compliment. I'm thankful for all these years."

The Stars led 1-0 on Loui Eriksson's power-play goal at 16:06 of the first period and outshot the Ducks 16-9 in the second. But Ryan's deflection past Kari Lehtonen 28 second into the period tied the score, and Ryan and George Parros scored 53 seconds apart midway through the period gave Anaheim a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes -- even though the Stars had a 30-16 advantage in shots.

"They hung around and got some opportunistic goals," center Brad Richards said. "For us, we have to be more realistic. Just because we step onto the ice doesn't mean we're going to score goals. It takes more work than that. We're getting frustrated but you have to stay with it. It's mental toughness of the team."

Brian Sutherby made it 3-2 with by putting in a rebound 6:08 into the third period, but Selanne tapped in Corey Perry's pass at 10:11 for a power-play goal and Perry added an insurance goal as the Ducks handed Dallas its second loss after the Stars started the season by going 5-1-0.

"We got some opportunistic goals at the start of the year, there were some pretty goals, and there were some (opponent) breakdowns," Richards said. "The league will tighten up. When you get off to a 4-0 or 5-1 start, teams are going to realize what you're doing and they are going to bear down. We just have to stick with it and keep battling."

Anaheim got 35 saves by Jonas Hiller to finish with a 2-2-0 mark on a four-game trip.

Ryan tied the game when he deflected Lubomir Visnovsky's knuckling shot down and past Lehtonen.

"It got us started," Ryan said of his first goal. "It's a morale boost. You're sitting around and feeling sorry for yourself, that kind of turns the tide."

Ryan then one-timed a pass by Visnovsky into the net from the right faceoff dot at 10:30 for the go-ahead goal.

Just 53 seconds later, Parros blocked a point shot by defenseman Karlis Skrastins, raced in alone and snapped a 10-footer that hit Lehtonen but floated into the net.

"I think we made a lot of mistakes, but nothing from a lack of effort," Dallas captain Brenden Morrow said. "But once again it was special teams that kind of let us down. The power play could have been huge for us early. I think we had the first three or four opportunities, and against a team like this who is aggressive, you have to put them away. We could have done that early."
