The Anaheim Ducks continue to have problems scoring on the road.

Teemu Selanne's goal early in the third period was the only puck to get past Steve Mason (31 saves) on Wednesday night as the Ducks' away record fell to 0-4 with a 3-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena.

Rick Nash had a pair of goals and Derek MacKenzie also scored for the Blue Jackets, who suffered a 5-2 loss to Chicago last Friday in their home opener, but have won two in a row since then. The victory was the first at home for new Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel.

"Yeah, it was unfortunate we got embarrassed," Nash said, referring to Friday's loss 5-2 against the Blackhawks. "The only way we're going to win them back is by winning games. That was a good start tonight."

Selanne's goal was the 609th of his career, but it wasn't enough for Anaheim, which was opening a four-game road swing.

"I think we did some things very well, but we made mistakes, too," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "Tonight our power play was good in some situations, as far as creating chances. But in the latter part, we just stood around and didn't really move and attack the box. We got some shots, but everything was from the perimeter."

Nash scored with the help of an opposing defenseman in the second period for a 2-0 lead, then added an empty-netter with 30 seconds left. Nash now has 3 goals this season.

After a scoreless first, the Blue Jackets broke through when MacKenzie collected a loose puck and skated solo down the left wing. As defenseman Sheldon Brookbank pinched in, MacKenzie leaned in to keep him away from the puck and slid it through Jonas Hiller's pads for his second of the season.

It was the second game in a row MacKenzie had a goal -- the first time he's scored in consecutive games in his 69 NHL games.

"I thought we played well," MacKenzie said. "Do we have room to improve? Yeah. There were a few parts in the game where we took penalties and those are things on some nights that are going to catch up to us. For the most part, the guys had a gritty, hard-working game. We did exactly what we planned to do and we got the two points."

Just 1:21 later, Nash made it 2-0 when his apparent feed for Antoine Vermette went off the stick of Ducks defenseman Toni Lydman and past Hiller, who made 19 saves.

The Blue Jackets killed off four straight minor penalties in the second period. The Ducks came in sixth in the NHL on the power play with a 26 percent success rate, while Columbus was 24th on the kill at 76 percent.

"The power play wasn't effective tonight," Anaheim captain Ryan Getzlaf said. "Those things kill you in games. You have to win those special teams' battles."

Just under a minute into the third period, the Ducks cut the lead in half, when Selanne seized control of the puck near the Columbus bench before firing a wrister from the left wing past Mason to make it 2-1.

The goal moved him to 16th on the career list, breaking a tie with Dino Ciccarelli.

"We wanted to make amends for (what happened Friday)," Arniel said. "We held on a little bit in the third period, but we found a way to win."
