Thrashers rally to beat Ducks 5-4 in shootout
Atlanta Thrashers 5, Anaheim Ducks 4
Anthony Stewart got the Atlanta Thrashers one point with the first three-goal game of his NHL career. Nigel Dawes and Chris Mason got them the second.

Stewart completed his hat trick by scoring the game-tying goal with 5:22 left in regulation and Dawes scored the only goal in the shootout as the Thrashers rallied for a 5-4 victory against the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night.

Stewart started the scoring 17 seconds into the game, beating Jonas Hiller with a wide-open blast from the high slot. He made it 4-3 by putting home Rich Peverley's rebound for a power-play goal with 9:25 left in regulation, then completed his hat trick when Peverley swatted at an airborne puck and tipped it off Stewart's stick and into the net. The call was upheld by video review.

The three goals were one less than Stewart scored in his first 105 NHL games.

"It feels great," Stewart said. "I can't shut it down right now. I'm happy to contribute any way I can and I am still trying to prove myself in this League. So any way I can contribute is great."

Mason and Hiller matched saves in the shootout until Dawes won the game by scoring on a snap shot from between the circles in the fourth round. Mason also made 37 saves through 65 minutes as the Thrashers (2-2-0) earned a split of two games in Southern California. They visit San Jose on Saturday night.

"They are a very courageous group," first-year coach Craig Ramsay said. "We were down four to Tampa and almost got it all the way back. We don't want to keep doing that, but we have a committed group that really wants to win. They want to do what they are asked to do. We're busy and we're fun. I don't want to coach a boring team — and I certainly am not."

The Ducks, now 1-3-1, failed to build on Wednesday's victory against Vancouver.

"We’re upset with losing the point tonight," coach Randy Carlyle said. "That is probably as emotional as I have been in losing a shootout because there were mental mistakes that we made that cost us the point, not their effort. They worked and tried. Some nights shootouts go for you, some nights they don’t."

Anaheim, now 1-3-1, tied the game at 1-1 midway through the first period on a power-play goal by Corey Perry, then took the lead at 9:43 of the second on a goal by defenseman Toni Lydman, making his Anaheim debut after missing time with double vision.

Chris Thorburn's power-play goal at 12:21 made it 2-2, but Teemu Selanne put the Ducks back in front at 19:08 with Anaheim's second power-play goal. Getzlaf's power-play goal 6:35 into the third off a cross-crease pass by Perry gave the Ducks a seemingly safe 4-2 lead.

"Any time you lose in your own building, it’s disappointing, especially when you have the lead going into the third," Getzlaf said. "We worked pretty hard all game long. We needed to close it out of the end and we didn’t."
