Hiller, Ducks blank Panthers

Jonas Hiller reassured the Anaheim Ducks that they're in good hands on Monday night.

Just one night after the team traded Jean-Sebastien Giguere to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Hiller stopped all 33 shots he faced as the Ducks wrapped up their six-game road trip with a 3-0 win against the Florida Panthers at the BankAtlantic Center.

It was Hiller's second shutout of the season. The Ducks' No. 1 goaltender also blanked the Nashville Predators on Nov. 5. Hiller made 30 saves in Anaheim's 2-1 shootout victory at Tampa Bay on Friday night, then signed a four-year contract extension Saturday.

"I felt good out there," Hiller said. "I had good legs and I felt comfortable. I think we did a real good job with penalty kill. They had a lot of chances."

Tomas Vokoun, who blanked the New York Islanders on Sunday afternoon, made 22 saves for the Panthers. He had four shutouts in January.

"We didn't do enough to earn goals tonight. We didn't win enough battles," Panthers coach Pete DeBoer said. "They were hungrier than us. I think we showed up and if they would have handed it to us, we would have taken it, but we weren't prepared to go out and grab a win."

After a scoreless first period, Ryan Getzlaf got Anaheim on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal at 15:17 of the second. Getzlaf capitalized on a turnover by Panthers defenseman Keith Ballard and ripped a wrist shot past Vokoun for his 14th goal of the season.

Teemu Selanne gave Anaheim a 2-0 lead with a power-play goal in the final second of the second period. With Ballard in the penalty box for high sticking, James Wisniewski fired a shot that hit the left post and hit Vokoun in the back. Selanne then gained control and poked it over the goal line. It was his 17th goal of the season.

Anaheim put the game out of reach when Corey Perry scored his 20th goal of the season with 2:42 left. With the teams at even strength, Perry took a pass from Getzlaf and blasted a slap shot from the right circle past Vokoun.

"I thought we played more of the type of hockey that’s going to be required in the last two games, both here and Tampa," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "We have to play tight, have to grind the type of hockey that is required to have success, if we can get a little more offense."

Material from wire services was used in this report.
