Ducks top Lightning 2-1 in shootout
Anaheim Ducks 2, Tampa Bay Lightning 1

James Wisniewski, shootout ace. Not bad for a defenseman who had never even taken an attempt in the penalty-shot tiebreaker until last Saturday.

Wisniewski got a chance to be the hero in the seventh round in St. Louis a week ago and came through on his first career attempt. His second try was just as successful -- he got his second game-deciding goal as the Anaheim Ducks beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 on Friday.

This time, Wisniewski also scored the Ducks' lone goal in regulation, prompting some hooting from injured teammate Teemu Selanne.

"Miracles happen," Selanne said while Wisniewski talked with reporters.

"Thanks Teemu," Wisniewski responded. "I would say something else, but you have 595 goals."

Wisniewski has scored just three goals in regulation, but figures to earn himself some more tries in the shootout.

"We might have to stick with him," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "The guy won the last one for us, so if it's not broken, don't try and fix it."

Ryan Getzlaf also scored in the shootout for Anaheim, now 2-3-0 on a six-game trip. The Ducks have just seven goals in regulation during their trip.

Martin St. Louis scored for TampaBay, which saw its three-game winning streak end.

"It was a hard-fought game," TampaBay coach Rick Tocchet said. "You knew they were going to bring their 'A' game."

Tampa Bay is 2-7 this season in shootouts. The Ducks improved to 4-4.

St. Louis put the Lightning ahead by cashing in on a 2-on-1 break at 9:47 of the first period. Steven Stamkos assisted on the goal for his 100th career point, which came in his 132nd game. Stamkos also had Tampa Bay's lone shootout goal.

Wisniewski tied it by beating Antero Niittymaki from the left circle at 6:36 of the second period for a power-play goal. Fellow defenseman Ryan Whitney ended a personal 16-game points drought by assisting on the goal.

The goal also ended Niittymaki's career-high scoreless streak 146 minutes, 13 seconds. The stretch included a 3-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night.

"He's given us a chance to win every night here," Tocchet said.

The Tampa Bay team goalie shutout streak record is 170:06, set by John Grahame in 2005-06 season.

Niittymaki made 31 saves. Anaheim's Jonas Hiller stopped 30 shots.

"Both teams were playing pretty solid in the defensive zone," Hiller said. "It's fun to play that way. As a goalie, you'd rather have a 1-1 game than like a 7-7 game."
