The Phoenix Coyotes' captain took the penalty that led to the goal that appeared to give the Detroit Red Wings an insurance goal. But he also assisted on two late goals that forced overtime, then scored the winner 3:50 into OT to give the Coyotes a stunning 5-4 victory on Tuesday night.
Doan was in the penalty box when Detroit took a 4-2 lead on Nicklas Lidstrom's power-play goal with 4:38 left.
"You're feeling pretty small right then," he said. "You just want to crawl under the bench and hide."
But he and the Coyotes didn't quit.
With Darren Helm in the penalty box for hooking, coach Dave Tippett pulled goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov to create a 6-on-4 skating advantage, and defenseman Keith Yandle scored with 90 seconds left to make it 4-3. With Bryzgalov again on the bench, Ed Jovanovski scored off a scramble with 22 seconds left, stunning the crowd at Joe Louis Arena and forcing overtime.
"We made a couple of mistakes early in the game that put us behind the 8-ball, but we found a way to dig ourselves out of it," Tippett said.
Doan won it when he picked up a rebound in front, got control as he skated across the crease and lifted the puck over goalie Jimmy Howard for the game-winner.
"I got to the net, there was a rebound," Doan said. "I kind of took it to the forehand and found a way to put it in."
"We thought we'd done a pretty good job. A 4-2 lead with a couple minutes left," Wings' coach Mike Babcock said. "Anyway you look at it, it's a tough loss for us. We were in a situation for us to get two points and them to get none. Then they end up with two and we get one and it doesn't help build any confidence either."
Lidstrom broke a 2-2 tie with 8:38 to play, beating Bryzgalov with a backhander from the slot. His second goal, a quick one-timer, appeared to settle the outcome.
"We have to find a way out of this. Playing a lot better in our own zone and bearing down when we have to," Lidstrom said. "It's not fun. It's disappointing when you're giving points away the way we have been. We know we need the points right now."
After Datsyuk opened the scoring 7:58 into the game, the Coyotes got second-period goals by Scottie Upshall and Yandle 99 seconds apart. But Eaves beat Bryzgalov just 11 seconds after Yandle's goal to get the Wings even.
