Flames top Canucks 3-2 in shootout

Tuesday, 08.16.2011 / 5:15 AM

The Calgary Flames did in the shootout what they couldn't do for the game's first 65 minutes -- get an extra puck past Roberto Luongo.

The Flames outshot Vancouver 40-21 during regulation and overtime, but needed a perfect showing against Luongo in the shootout to beat Vancouver 3-2 on Saturday night, ending the Canucks' four-game winning streak.

Jamie Lundmark, who scored the tying goal midway through the second period, capped Vancouver's 3-for-3 performance against Luongo in the shootout by beating Luongo with a backhander -- moving the Flames into first place in the Northwest Division with 57 points, one more than Vancouver and Colorado.

"It's good to contribute anytime I'm up," said Lundmark, who was recalled from Abbotsford Heat of the AHL on Friday. "Obviously I'm here to do a job and help the team win and that's what I try to do every night, whether it's scoring shootout goals or doing whatever."

It was a 180-degree turnaround for the Flames, who were called out by coach Brent Sutter for their poor play in Friday's 3-2 home loss to Columbus.

"I want the team to recognize this is the way we have to play," Sutter said. "Tonight we played a strong game. That's what we should expect from ourselves on a nightly basis."

Only the play of Luongo kept the Flames from winning in regulation.

"Louie was great, that's for sure," teammate Alex Burrows said. "I think, for the most part, they outworked us in a lot of areas."

The Flames didn't completely shut down the NHL's hottest line, but they limited the trio of Henrik and Daniel Sedin and Burrows to one goal -- by Daniel, with assists from the other two. Daniel Sedin's snap shot past Miikka Kiprusoff after a perfect passing play at 4:41 of the second period put Vancouver ahead 2-1. Burrows had only an assist after scoring three times in each of the Canucks' two previous games.

Lundmark got the Flames even at 9:54 when his shot caromed off Vancouver defenseman Willie Mitchell and past Luongo.

The Flames got the jump on Vancouver when Rene Bourque opened the scoring at 9:36. He skated down left wing, cut towards the net and roofed a shot over Luongo's shoulder from the short side.

The Canucks had taken only two shots on Kiprusoff before Mikael Samuelsson tied the game at 14:09. Samuelsson, upset with being left off Sweden's Olympic team, extended his points streak to six games with his third goal in three games and fifth in six since Dec. 29 -- the same day the Swedish Olympic team was named.

Vancouver went more than 10 minutes without a shot in the third, but the Flames could not beat Luongo. Lundmark put a shot past him but hit the post. In the first minute of overtime, Calgary's Daymond Langkow clanked a shot off the crossbar.

"We're disappointed with the loss, obviously, but we found a way to get it to overtime," Luongo said. "So the game was right there for us."
