Oilers stun Blues with 5-3 comeback win
Edmonton Oilers 5, St. Louis Blues 3

The Edmonton Oilers saved the best of their road trip for last

The Oilers rallied from a 3-0 deficit for a 5-3 victory at St. Louis on Friday night, giving them five consecutive road victories on a trip that began with a 7-3 blowout loss in Vancouver. It was the most consecutive wins on a single road trip for the Oilers since joining the NHL in 1979.

Dustin Penner had a goal and 3 assists, and Gilbert Brule scored twice for Edmonton, which scored four times in the third period to stun the crowd at the Scottrade Center.

"I think after winning five on the road, it's tough to play any better," Penner said. "It's tough to play any better than that."

Penner assisted on the Oilers' first three goals, the first two from Brule, and added his 18th goal of the season with 2:57 left in regulation to cap the scoring. Sam Gagner and Shawn Horcoff also scored in the Oilers' four-goal third.

"To me, the will of the Edmonton Oilers in the third period was stronger than ours," Blues coach Andy Murray said. "Unacceptable. We didn't win enough one-on-one battles down the stretch, obviously."

It looked like an easy win for the Blues when David Backes' second goal of the game at 15:35 of the second period gave St. Louis a 3-0 lead. Ty Conklin, who had blanked Detroit on Wednesday, was working on his second straight shutout until Brule scored with 11 seconds left in the second period.

Then the roof fell in on the Blues, as the Oilers scored four times in less than nine minutes. Brule got his second goal at 8:31, Gagner tied it at 11:19, Horcoff put the Oilers ahead to stay at 13:52 and Penner drove down right wing and slid a backhander through Conklin's skates for an insurance goal.

"It's tough to get down three goals," Brule said. "But I think when I got that one late in the second it gave us a big boost. I think we were coming out of it the last seven minutes of the second and all of the third. I don't think they can handle our approach."

Penner's four-point night was his best since he had 2 goals and 3 assists against Columbus on Oct. 22. He has scored a goal in three consecutive games after going two straight without a score.

"I got that feeling, after that second goal and just the way we were playing starting the third period, they were sitting back," Penner said. "Whenever a team does that, if you sit back, it becomes pretty hairy."

Backes scored in the first period, T.J. Oshie converted Paul Kariya's pass for a power-play goal at 7:55 of the second and Backes fired a wrister past Deslauriers with 4:25 left in the period -- but the Blues couldn't hold the lead.

"It's unacceptable," Blues defenseman Barret Jackman said. "Right after they got that goal at the end of the second period, it seemed like we flipped a switch and we were on our heels and weren't doing the things that got us success in the first two periods. We weren't skating when we got the puck, we were standing still."
