Panthers end skid with SO win over Avs
Colorado Avalanche 5, Florida Panthers 6
They nearly let it slip away, but the Florida Panthers put an end to their losing streak on Wednesday night.

Stephen Weiss recorded his second NHL hat trick and scored in the shootout to lift the Panthers to a 6-5 win against the Colorado Avalanche at the BankAtlantic Center. The victory snapped Florida's five-game skid.

Rookies T.J. Galiardi and Matt Duchene both scored for Colorado with less than a minute left in regulation to send the game to overtime. Duchene had two goals on the night and now has eight this season.

Scott Clemmensen, starting in place of injured Panthers goalie Tomas Vokoun, made 29 saves. Vokoun is still in recovery mode after being drilled in the head by teammate Keith Ballard's stick on Monday.

''The bottom line is we got the win,'' Clemmensen said. ''It was a seesaw battle. Fortunately, we had a hot shooter and he made the difference for us.''

Ballard was involved in another incident involving a goaltender on Wednesday, although this time it didn't involve his own. Charging toward the net with less than a minute left in overtime, Ballard slid toward the net and appeared to collide with Avs goalie Craig Anderson, whose head hit the goal post. Just like Monday, Ballard declined to speak with the media.

''He wasn't running the goalie,'' Florida captain Bryan McCabe said. ''He either lost an (skate) edge or was hit. He hit him for sure, but didn't mean to. He was on his butt. How can you stop?''

Anderson was unable to finish and was replaced by Peter Budaj, who stopped the first four shots he faced in the shootout before Weiss beat him with a wrister. Anderson made 39 saves against his former team.

"Obviously he took a hard hit there at the end of the game," Colorado coach Joe Sacco said. "He wasn't able to finish the game. I don't know any more than that. I thought Peter did a tremendous job coming in there cold."

Weiss scored his first two goals late in the first period. He broke a scoreless tie at 16:05 before giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead on a rebound with 1:14 left.

''It was nice to score. (Anderson) is not an easy guy to score on so, yes, you have to be happy about that but it was more important for us to get the two points,'' Weiss said.

Chris Stewart cut the deficit in half for Colorado when he beat Clemmensen 5:52 into the second, but Weiss notched his first hat trick since Jan. 13, 2007, less than three minutes later when he ripped a wrister past Anderson to make it 3-1.

Duchene made it 3-2 via the power play midway through the second period, but Nathan Horton restored Florida's two-goal lead with a power-play goal of his own from the slot at 16:21.

''It's tough,'' Duchene said. ''You battle back so hard, you played so hard in the third and the second period. I think we maybe deserved a little better fate.''

The teams again exchanged goals early in third; Paul Stastny made it 4-3 with his seventh goal of the season at 4:49 before Dominic Moore responded for Florida via the power play at 7:41. It was his third goal of the season.

"I'm proud of the way our guys hung in there and fought back at the end," Sacco said. "We were able to salvage a point, but we've got to be better than that those first couple of periods."
