Red Wings end slump with SO win over Blues
Detroit Red Wings 4, St. Louis Blues 3
The Detroit Red Wings killed two birds with one stone on Saturday night.

Not only did the defending Western Conference champions score, but they also won a game.

After going more than 175 minutes without a tally, Tomas Holmstrom found the back of the net, which led to goals from Kris Draper and Henrik Zetterberg before Todd Bertuzzi scored the winner in a shootout as Detroit ended a three-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory against the St. Louis Blues at the Scottrade Center.

"It feels terrific," Bertuzzi said. "We dug ourselves in another hole, but we showed some resilience and got some big goals at some big times."

Bertuzzi beat Chris Mason with a gorgeous backhander after watching Pavel Datsyuk score on a similar shot.

"It was an uglier version of Pavel's goal," Bertuzzi said. "I've spent a lot of time working on that. On previous teams, I've done it quite a bit, so I'm pretty comfortable doing it. It was nice to be put in that spot to do it."

Zetterberg also had an assist, while Jimmy Howard made 32 saves before allowing only one goal in four attempts in the shootout.

"It was a big game for us," Howard said. "I took it upon myself to get us the extra point."

David Backes had a goal and an assist for St. Louis, and Roman Polak and Brad Boyes also scored while David Perron had two assists. Mason finished with 33 saves.

"It was a tight game, and they made a play at the end of the game to tie it," Blues coach Andy Murray said. "We had the right people, in our opinion, on the ice at the end that we wanted to have out there. They made a play and scored a goal. Certainly when you're leading in the last minute, you want the win."

Goals by Backes and Polak gave the Blues a 2-0 lead before the end of the first period as St. Louis outshot Detroit 13-12. But Holmstrom finally ended the Wings' scoring drought when he beat Mason on the power play at 2:35 of the second before Draper tied it early in the third.

"Howie had to do it by himself in the first period, but I thought our guys really responded," Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "We dug our way back. Obviously, it's been a tough grind here, but we played real well and found a way to win. We finally scored some goals."

Boyes restored the Blues' lead at 8:32 of the third, but Zetterberg tied it in the final minute of regulation when his shot from the behind the net caromed off Blues defenseman Barret Jackman's arm and past Mason.

"They're the best team over the last decade hands-down," Mason said. "They never quit. They're down 2-0 after one period, and over in that dressing room, they still believe they're going to win and that's how they play."
