Needing a goal in Round 6 of the shootout to keep his team alive, Carolina Hurricanes forward Matt Cullen made a nifty move on Price and appeared to have most of the net to shoot at, but Price stretched out his pad and just got enough of Cullen's wrister and swatted it away before it could cross the goal line as the Habs eked out a 3-2 win at the Bell Centre.
"He made a great move … that's one of the better moves I've seen in the shootout," Price said. "He had me. I just stuck my foot back there and hoped for the best. The best happened."
Andrei Kostitsyn erased a 2-1 deficit with just over two minutes remaining in regulation before Maxim Lapierre beat Manny Legace in the shootout. Montreal (10-11-0) is 8-0 in games that last longer than three periods.
"Finally, we got a big win," Lapierre said. "We didn't like the way we played in the first periods, but we got the two points and that's the only thing that matters right now."
Brandon Sutter and Jussi Jokinen scored for Carolina (3-12-5), which is already without starting goaltender Cam Ward and saw No. 2 Michael Leighton leave the game with a lower-body injury during the second period. The Hurricanes allowed fewer than three non-shootout goals for the first time in 13 games.
Leighton left the game at 7:12 of the second after stretching out to make a glove save on a point shot by Jaroslav Spacek. Legace was barely tested until Kostitsyn tied it late in the third.
Price, who made a team-record 53 saves in Nashville on Saturday, stopped 30 of 32 shots. He came up big in overtime as Carolina spent the final 1:59 on a power play. Price made four saves during the man advantage, including a fabulous stop on Erik Cole with about 20 seconds left. The Hurricanes outshot the Canadiens 7-1 in the extra session.
"It's tough to (kill) a 4-on-3 because there's so much ice out there, but our guys did a good job," Price said. "They kept everything to the outside, basically. We got a couple of big blocks there where I wouldn't have seen the puck go in if it hadn't been blocked.
"I've just been working real hard and trying to get a bounce here and there. Tonight, that finally happened for me."
Carolina took the lead with quick tallies in the second period. Ray Whitney sent a pretty saucer feed up for Sutter, who redirected it past Price for his fifth goal of the season at 3:28. Jokinen put the Hurricanes in front less than three minutes later as he one-timed Cullen's feed past Price to make it 2-1.
"We had some key pieces out, so it's not going to be fancy," Carolina coach Paul Maurice said. "It may not be a great show, but our team played a smart game."
But the Canadiens forced overtime when Kostitsyn banked one in off Legace from behind the net at 17:14 of a third period that saw each team fire 13 shots. It was his second goal of the season.
