Iginla's OT goal lifts Flames to 3-2 win over Stars

Not long after Calgary Flames coach Brent Sutter said he wanted more from Jarome Iginla, the captain scored twice -- including the game-winner at 1:25 of overtime -- in a 3-2 victory against the Dallas Stars at the American Airlines Center on Wednesday night.

Iginla, who had only four goals in Calgary's first 12 games, scored on the power play in the extra session after Stars defenseman Niklas Grossman was whistled for delay of game. Sixteen seconds later, Iginla ripped a shot past from the left circle a screened Marty Turco.

''We've been talking a lot as a group about bringing our compete level up, and we really battled tonight,'' Iginla said. ''It was a step in the right direction.''

Iginla scored his first goal of the night when he broke a scoreless tie at 15:53 of the second period. With the teams at even strength, Iginla took a pass from Mark Giordano and fired a wrist shot from the right circle past Turco for his fifth goal of the season.

''Certainly Jarome's game was good, and not just because he scored two goals,'' Sutter said. ''He's a big, strong guy that gets in there in areas where he's hard to retain.''

Dallas responded with a pair of goals before the midway point of the third period. James Neal beat Curtis McElhinney (38 saves) for his ninth goal of the season at 4:49 before Loui Eriksson deflected a centering feed from Brad Richards into the net at 8:52.

''We did what we wanted to do against Calgary; we got the puck behind the defense, we really exposed the defense,'' Stars coach Marc Crawford said. ''I thought they were on their heels the better part of the night. We generated a number of power play opportunities. I thought we were the better club in terms of chances generated by a long shot.''

But Calgary managed to get the equalizer before the end of regulation, as Daymond Langkow evened the score with just 49 seconds left. With McElhinney on the bench for an extra attacker, Langkow took a pass from Iginla and backhanded the puck past Turco to make it 2-2. It was his fourth goal of the season.

Dallas captain Brenden Morrow was awarded a penalty shot at 12:26 of the second period after he was hooked to the ice on the way to the net by Giordano, but McElhinney denied Morrow's wrist shot to keep the game scoreless.

''He hasn't played in a while, and he stood tall tonight and he was rewarded for it,'' Sutter said of McElhinney, who made just his second start of the season. ''He had a great effort.''
