Kings rally in third to top Coyotes
Los Angeles Kings 5, Phoenix Coyotes 3
The Phoenix Coyotes have had one of the stingiest defenses in the League this season -- except when they play the Los Angeles Kings.

Drew Doughty capped a four-goal rally by the Kings, scoring on a wrist shot through traffic with 4:51 remaining Monday night for a 5-3 win over the Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena.

Doughty teed up a shot from above the circles that beat Jason LaBarbera through a screen and put the Kings ahead for the first time since late in the opening period.

''No one on their team tried to block my shot so I had a whole lane to the net,'' Doughty said. ''I just put it where the goalie wasn't and luckily it didn't get blocked or hit a stick.''

Ryan Smyth then scored his second of the game into an empty net with 39 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

"We let them back in in the second, and they played well, but we gave them a little bit of momentum there and we just wanted to take it back," Smyth said. "I thought we answered really well in the third. I thought every line contributed and we just did the simple things."

The Coyotes have lost two of three to the Kings this season, giving up 13 goals in the process. They've allowed only 17 goals in their other 11 games.

Shane Doan answered an Anze Kopitar goal with 4:01 left in the first by scoring with less than a second remaining in the period, and the Coyotes took a 3-1 lead in the second on goals by Martin Hanzal and Scottie Upshall.

"Our execution all over the ice, right from the goal out, was not very good tonight," Phoenix coach Dave Tippett said. "We got ourselves a lead and we gave them a gift at the end of the second period, and to me that was a big turning point goal right there. If we go into the third period up 3-1 hopefully we can push that game along."

Instead, Smyth scored with 58 seconds left in the period after LaBarbera was unable to freeze the puck on a play near his net. Smyth ended up sending the puck across the crease, skating around the net and slamming in his own pass to draw the Kings closer.

''I made a bad play at the end of the period and it kind of changed momentum there,'' LaBarbera said. ''I think that was the turning point in this game.''

They got even on a Justin Williams goal 6:44 into the third. Williams collected a loose puck after the Coyotes had initially won a defensive zone draw, skated in front and beat LaBarbera inside the left post.

Williams was reunited on a line with Smyth and Kopitar after he missed the past five games with a lower-body injury.

"The nice thing about him is he makes plays on the wall," Smyth said. "Sometimes you get rewarded and he got rewarded with a big goal for us that gave us some momentum and then Drew Doughty scored."

Jonathan Quick needed to make just 13 saves to earn the win. LaBarbera stopped 22 shots in just his third start of the season, as Ilya Bryzgalov got a night off.
